Question on Omega springs

Here's my issue. I just bought my first benchmade, a 746 mini-onslaught. The clip-side omega spring on it came broken. I'd normally just ship it off to get warranty services, but I'm currently deployed in afghanistan right now and the main post that all the mail ships through doesn't allow knives to be shipped stateside. Is there any place online that sells these springs? Or is the spring the same size as the one in the griptilian?

The knife still works, just it has a tad bit of forward bladeplay and the broken springs jams the knife in the open position sometimes when I go to close it. I have emailed benchmade to see if I can get a replacement part, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that.

Likely negative on your questions.

There have been many reports here over the years of users fabricating field-expedient replacements with music wire, most commonly guitar strings, which you could probably easily source.

I apologize for not having the specifics at my fingertips - searching "guitar" and "axis" or "omega" would probably turn up the specifics.

Jegerd2,

Have you contacted Benchmade? If not I suggest you do, explain your circumstances and see what they suggest.

They "may" accommodate your request for a replacement spring or "other" option considering the circumstances or offer a solution you may not have considered. I know they have gone out of their way to work with service members in the past.

Not saying they will but it never hurts to ask.

Also, have you talked to the officer in charge of the postal service there? There may be an exception allowable if you go threw the appropriate channels. Again, never hurts to ask.

I normally don't recommend disassembling one's knife unless they have no choice but you may also want to confirm that the spring is actually broken and didn't just pop out of place. It's rare but does happen. If that's the case you only have to put it back in place. I hope so as that's the easiest fix of all.

Best of luck, I really hope this can be easily resolved for you.

In the meantime, be safe and thank you for your service!

Yah, I've sent benchmade an email, waiting on it now.

I know for a fact the spring is broken because when its open i can see it through the skeletonized liner. It is broken at the bottom curve where it begins the u shape, it also flies up and jams the knife preventing it from closing sometimes. I'm half tempted to pull that scale off to remove the spring

You can make one yourself if you can find some thin MIG welding wire...try checking with the mechanics and like.

I agree it's probably better to get it out of there before it jams the blade in the open or closed position. Or just stop using it until you can get he issue resolved.

Either way, wait until you hear back from BM before you do anything. And I'd also suggest you talk to who ever's in charge of the mail service. Not the first guy but someone a little higher in the chain if you know what I mean. I know that sometimes exceptions will be made depending on the circumstances. You have to ask though or you'll never know.

I used to have cigarettes mailed to me while deployed even though the USPS said you couldn't mail them. They made exceptions for servicemen. Once it got into the military mail system it was GTG.

I'm hoping though that BM will come threw for you. When they can they will go above and beyond.

Best of luck!

Wanted to add. if BM says no, e-mail me your info and exactly what needs to be replaced. The model and such. Although it's in your post just put it all together.

I'll see if I can help on this end if nessasary.

This is called teamwork and Kudos to everyone. Benchmade is proud to take care of our troops and this won't be the first time they've made an exception to the rules regarding shipping parts. I don't speak for them, this is my opine and I hope all is well over there Sir. Please let us know how it turns out!

They might be able to help you out, I know they have exceptional CS and have come through for people and break their own rules...reblades are supposed to be done in the shop but I've heard of a case where they mailed a balisong blade up north to Canada and had the user swap the blade himself since obviously mailing a balisong back and forth over the border is a no go and the knife would have probably been confiscated...

Get on the horn, tell 'em you're deployed, they should make an exception in your case an get them sent out.

Still waiting for an email back from them, not sweating it as it is the weekend. In the meantime, I ordered a bonecollector lockback to use untill I get my 746 fixed. Anyone know how to remove the etching on one side? I love the look of the knife, but I'm not too keen on the waddel bonecollector etched in the side of it.

Well, the other spring on my 746 just failed. Luckily I didn't have my fingers in the way, guess I should have stopped using it after the first one broke. Going to give BM the benefit of the doubt and chalk this one up to bad luck. Will use my new bonecollector once it gets in and send this one in for warranty when the deployment's up.
