Question on ontario stainless marine knife

imho no... but if you are going to use it in a humid or salty area It should be enough for most chores...and it won't get rusted as easily as a 1095 knife.

I believe i read where it is 440a stainless. Think it is as good as a 1095 carbon steel b;ade?

What do you mean "as good as"? What do you plan on doing with the knife?

For "as good as", why don't you make a list of what you want your knife to do and then compare the steels. Then choose the one that has the characteristics that you want in a knife.

If you are concerned about corrosion, than ss is the way to go. Everything in the knife world is a compromise, especially steel selection.

If it were my decision for an all-around, all environment, kabar style knife, I would go with this one:

I have found the overall quality of the Kabar products superior to Ontario's but thats just my opinion. BTW, I have had Ontario's stainless and its nothing special.

as good as??

err nor really

but you are kinda comparing apples to oranges

IIRC

440a should be less abrasion resistant and not get as sharp, but should be plenty tuff if ht is correct

I have one of the SS Ontario. For me, it is a back up knife and for that, it is perfect. The edge won't hold up as long but that is not needed in my case.

BTW I have lots of Ontario's and have had nothing but good service for my knife dollar.

The only thing I don't like about the newer stainlesss kabar is it has the epoxy coating on the butt cap and hand guard. I really like kabars but I'm not fan of the epoxy coating. I wish they were still parkerized.

If you are patient, you can find many of the older parkerized repros on the bay. The blades typically aren't ground as well as the new ones but they will do the job the same.

I wouldn't mind the baked on finish if it was more like the coating SOG uses. The black they use on the SEAL Elite series is somewhere between the Parkerizing color and matt black. Or for that matter, the coating on the Gerber LMF II and Prodigy would also work well.

The black epoxy coating looks great but chips too easliy once used. Looks like they could come up with something better. The Becker knives are highly rated and the same thing with them, 1095 epoxy coated steel.
