I'm almost ashamed to admit it but I have never owned a Buck knife with the black phenolice handles. Do these handles get slippery when wet or bloody?? Looking at the 119. I like the looks of the wood handle ones but there is just something about the classic black ones to. It will be awhile before I buy one. Just bought a 403. The only Buck kinfe I have that is not either wood or stag is a stockman that I have had for about 24 years.

Last year dressed out my neighbors buck with my 119 and it got a bit bloody but I never noticed it slipping. I think it gives a ok grip. If slipping is a issue look at the Buck Vanguard. Very nice knife. Just right sized.

Through blood and guts, it's never bothered me and never slipped.

The finger grooves help. Anything with a black handle is likely to have a guard and overall less likely to be troublesome than a regular 110 and God only knows the huge number of deer the 110 has gutted out (field dressed for the sensitive among us).

The 119 should be ok.
Or try finding a 619 (a 119 with a rubber handle) if you like the blade geometry of the 119. No longer in production but can be found at the auction site that starts with a vowel.
A Nighthawk 650 may also suit your needs (also rubberized handle but diff blade geometry/shape). These are in production.
I am not a hunter. But I have used both the 119 and 650 in the kitchen quite a bit. The 119 is better for slicing haggis, Spam, salami, and other fine meats.

my wife has threatened to use my knives in the kitchen
but when i wiped out a 110 to do some ting she said ....
so i dont
so you can cook also! scott is a good cook too!!!

humm can most buck owners cook great?

Thanks. I have a wood handled vanguard and love it. Just looking at a 119 for who knows what reason. I'm kind of compulisive I guess. I like using differant knives. I have used my vanguard in the kitchen until I bought my wife some decent kitchen knives.

I think when Vanguard was mentioned they probably were thinking of the rubber-handled one.

I use a 102 and a 119 in the kitchen, but my 119 is used more for chopping and dicing onions and potatoes and stuff. I'm gonna pick up an old 121 one of these days.

Side note: My wife wanted to cut some hosta out to give to a friend for her yard (which involves cutting into the roots and getting the blade in the dirt) so I told her to go ahead and use the 119 and she was real happy with it. I checked it and it was still sharp after some pretty extensive digging.

Then she used it out there again and I checked and found it pretty dull, but it only took about ten minutes to get it nice and sharp again. It's an 80s model so it must be that 420 Mod and not the newer 420HC.

But it seems like real good steel.

After doing a little more looking I think i like the wood handle ones better. I have seen them in cherry, cocobola, and rosewood(bass pro). But they all look the same to me. Am I missing something??

They all have their subtle differences.
I had a cherry 119 and 110 they were very red compared to the cocobola.
The rosewood colored ones are a shade different than the cocbola but (for me) it was hard to tell. They also made the 119 in walnut and palm wood and...

Ok thanks. I guess I will have to end up getting more than one. Just so I can see the differance in color. Then I might have to get one of the black ones just to be a traditionalist. Then I may have too... Well you get the picture. .

We're all Buck collectors....we get the picture....and pray our wives are compasionate and understanding because of our obsession.
