Question on screw durability in G-10 models

Hi all:

Recently acquired a Military, Starmate and G-10 Civilian. I owned all of these before and, like an idiot, got rid of them. I have a habit of checking all the screws on my knives, and they all needed a little tightening on these three. I am totally satisfied with these three knives, am just wondering if there is anything I could or should do to ensure maximum life, with minimum problems, out of them. Does anyone loc-tite the screws in place? Is this recommended or even necessary. No complaints, I love all three knives. In fact, I went to a show this weekend, and the lock up on my Military and Starmate put the customs I handled to shame! These lock up rock solid! Thanks, any feedback is appreciated.

There is usually a durability issue with screws that go directly in the G-10. If the screws go into the liner or a threaded metal insert, then they should be fine. Locktite is always a good idea in any knife IMHO.

I always make it a habit to loc-tite the screws in my G10 Spydies, I haven't had any problems with them coming loose at all. I've never lost any screws off of my Millies, Starmate, Civilian, etc., but better safe than sorry....;)

If the screw goes through G-10 and into a metal liner or back spacer or whatever, then I personally don't worry about it too much.

When the screw only goes into G-10 though, then I glue it in place and try not to fool with it afterwards. It's really easy to strip the threads out of G-10.

Leo-

You should be able to find Loc-Tite at your local hardware store or automotive parts store. The blue is medium strength (meaning you can remove the screw with added torque) and the red is high strength (nearly impossible to remove).
Just a dab of the blue should be all you need.

Thanks guys! This is why I'm a Gold Member here! I'll head out to the hardware store tonight!

Okay, I took the screws out, put some Loc-Tite on them and they wouldn't screw back in! They just went round and round in the holes. Is it possible I put too much Loc-Tite on them, and they were just sort of floating and wouldn't catch the threads?

The next day I tried to tighten up the screws and they did catch on the threads and seem to be tight now. I am sure that the Loc-Tite dried overnight and is now doing nothing to hold the screws in place, but now I'm afraid to take them out again for fear I will strip them completely. I did not use excess torque, and they seem to be snug now. What should I do? Leave well enough alone? If it ain't broke don't fix it? I was very careful and now have some doubts about the durability of the knives (Starmate and Military).
Or should I take em out and 'glue' em in? Cerulean, do you use actual super glue?

I have one other question, couldn't you put a screw together rivet all the way through and solve this problem altogether?

Thanks again,

Leo Gilbert

I've attempted to super glue screws into G-10 before, but it didn't seem to turn out very well. Trying to get the Loc-Tite to work might be a better idea.

If the screws are all the way in and pretty snug, then I'd personally just leave them alone and forget about it. There's probably not much to worry about there.

In the Military at least, all of the screws go into metal. (The clip screws go into the liner and the backspacer has metal inserts.) I don't own a Starmate, but I seem to remember that its construction is similar to the Military's.
