Hello All,

I have a guestion regarding the Sharpmaker. I currently use a Lansky Aligner set on 20 deg to sharpen all of my folding knives. I have been eyeballing the sharpmaker for a while now, and I am curious to know exactly how the 30 and 40 deg markings are determined? I mean, does the 40 deg mean that each side is 20 or would I have to reprofile from my lansky to use the sharpmaker? Thanks for the responses.

There are two separate pairs of slots - one pair for 30 degrees and one pair for 40 degrees. The 40 degree (or 30 degree) setting is inclusive - in other words, 20 degrees per side.

Thanks!

Now I'll have to pick one up. It sure seems it would be more efficient to use for touch-ups after the blade was profiled.

One more question guys,

How well does the sharpmaker perform when it comes to really sharpening a dull knife versus touching up a slightly used edge? In other words, could the sharpmaker function as one's sole sharpening system?

I found it works very well putting an edge on a dull knife. it's sharpens pretty quick too.

Reprofiling a really dull blade is a tough job on the Sharpmaker. It's great for maintaining a good edge, though.

Recently, Spyderco came out with diamond-coated hones for the 204 which make reprofiling a breeze, but they'll cost 'ya at least $50.

Yes indeed if you would add optional diamond rods to work on really dull edges or for edge reprofiling.
