Question on slot-head handle bolts

On straight-handled Busse Combat models with slot-head handle fasteners, can the micarta slabs be removed just by unscrewing the bolts? Or are they epoxied on as well? Was Lock-Tite used to secure these bolts to their threads at the factory? Should heat be applied to the bolt heads before unscrewing, to neutralize any Lock-Tite?

Thanks--Will

Will,
I asked Dave about refinishing one of the old A2 Meanstreets with the slotted screws and he told me the slabs would need to be replaced because they would be damaged when removing them. If I remember right he said they could be replaced with the new slabs and tube fasteners, I think he said the old ones were epoxied on, I can't give you an answer about the Loc-tite. Hope this helps.

Just by chance, did you discuss how much the handle conversion would cost? I was thinking about doing the same.

Eric,

Thanks for the response. Still not sure if that info applies to my knife, which is an old INFI straight Battle Mistress with the ground swedge. Kinda hate to change any of the original furniture on it.

I've sent an email to Dave R., which is where I probably should have gone to begin with. I'll report back on whatever I learn from him.

Thanks--Will

Here's Dave's Roberson's reply to the above question:

"The slabs were not epoxied however there is an adhesive on the bolts. You can put a soldering iron on the bolt head to melt the adhesive then unscrew."

Thanks--Will
