Ok so Case. We all know 'em. Most of us like em. But what about their older products. From what I can find, it seemed to be a bit better. But that isn't the point of this thread. I'm looking at a few case knives. The Case XX 087PE and the Case XX 6347HP and PE. So I'm curious. Are these both carbon steel blades? Stainless? I didn't think Case used too much stainless in their knives in the 70's but its not uncommon for me to be wrong. Now, this thread won't be any good without pictures. Seeing as I don't have any of my own, LETS SEE YOURS!!!:D:p

Case 6347HP is CV.I bought this one around 1985.Nice quality, very smooth opening and closing. A toch of blade wobble on the master blade, but I don't get bothered by minimal blade wobble. It cuts. The bottom one is a 63087 that was my main carry for ten years or so. These are made in the era where they didn't tumble so the tangs are crisp, not rounded over.

Case 6347 (3 Dot, 1977, carbon steel):

this one is an even older XX. Quality is even better as the scales are better shaped and defined.Pinned shield also.Wish I kept it now,but I say that about every knife I trade o0r sell off.

Look at the difference between Blues 6347 and mine. The scales on blues are rounded off for better f/f. mine are squared. Newer knife where they started to cut corners like shaping.

To the original poster's question....

Case has made both the 6347 Sh Sp and the 63087 Sp Pen in both CV and in SS. The 47 was made in both CV and in SS as far back as the early XX era (1949).

The first time that the 63087 Sp Pen was made in stainless was much later - it was converted from CV to SS in 1981. It remains in the Case line today in SS.

If you are looking at specific knives, and they are CASE XX stamped knives, then a stainless knife will have CASE XX/STAINLESS as the tang stamping, where the CV knife will simply have CASE/XX.

There are other things to look for - on a Case three three bladed knife, at least one of the secondary blades will have either "STAINLESS" or "SS" marked on the tang. The pattern number will be followed by "SSP", "SS" or simply "S" depending on the year and pattern.

For example an older CASE XX stamped 5347 Sh Sp with SS blades will have the pattern number 5347 HPS as an abbreviation.

But the tang stamping is the easiest way to tell on a XX, USA, or 70's era knife since the word "STAINLESS" will always be part of it.

Great pics and info guys. I learn alot here every day and I love it. Gorgeous knives all. Seems like I will do myself good to keep an eye out for a nice condition one. Seems like it would make an excellent carry.
