Hi Guys,

just a fast question, does the guard typically come off on a take down? The reason I ask is I force my guards on and when I'm finished, it's very hard to get off. This makes for a tight fit, whereas, if it were to easily come off, I don't see how I could get a good, watertight fit.

Thanks,

Dave

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the whole purpose of a takedown is that it is servicable. Aside from rubber gaskets, you aren't going to get it water tight(I'm sure it is possible but freekin hard!) and I don't think that is the goal. Secure, smooth and solid sounds more like it, IMO.

Thanks Rick,

I have both soldered my guards or sometimes used Jb weld. They're pretty darned waterproof. This is just my opinion, but I do not think the guard should be able to come off of a take down for that very reason. But, I could be wrong...

If you are going to permanently mount a guard, then yes of course you can make it waterproof and SHOULD. Take down models are meant to be, well.... taken down and cleaned.

A trick I learned from Bailey Bradshaw is to melt BEE'S WAX on all of the mating surfaces and then assemble the knife. Since bee's wax is an inert substance, it effects nothing on the knife - handle material, blade or hardware.
Simply wipe off whatever squeezes out and the knife is waterproof until disassembled.

That's is so simple, it hurts. Can't see the forest fer the trees....
