Question on the 835Y

I have a question for you Schrade experts on the 835Y. Are the scales made out of delrin, celluloid, or some other plastic? Or, framed another way, do I need to worry about the scales on such a knife deteriorating like celluloid can? Additionally, can anyone tell me where the name "Dude" came that is associated with this knife?

Thanks for the help!

Wayne:

The Schrade Walden NY 835Y could be celluloid. I have seen some that have shrunken very badly. I think a Schrade Walden could be either. The ones marked Schrade NY USA, with 835Y on the front or back, are probably yellow delrin. You can tell the difference in a picture of a closed knife, when the birdseye rivets are set closed to the end on the Schrade Walden example. The yellow cell examples I've see, the yellow is translucent. You can see into it.

I'm not familiar with the "Dude" term.

SCHRADE WALDEN Example, not sure if cell or not, I think it is delrin.

SCHRADE NY USA example, delrin

SCHRADE WALDEN example, undoubtedly cell. :D

I have a Walden 835Y exactly like Hal's first picture above. Mine is similarly translucent, and is celluloid, or something that shrinks like celluloid, as it has just barely shrunk. A tiny sliver of brass liner can be seen all around, and the birdseye rivets are a little proud now. It is such a lovely little knife that I will start looking for one in Delrin (or "derlin," as the e-darlin's call it).

Pick up something in sandbar stag to go with it Calvin. :D

Yesterday, in answering the question, I came across Wayne's "Dude" he was asking about in the first picture. The very nice 835Y with Schrade Walden stamp. Wayne, do you have the 835Y in hand yet?

The badly gassed 835Y, was in an auction I ran across yesterday looking for a picture of a shrunken example, though I hoped for one not so bad. Maybe a candidate for ugly knife of the month award.

The auction ended yesterday, and I found it amazing someone would actually bid on the piece. I got a kick out of the description:

I am offering a Schrade Walden folding knife. The knive measures closed 3 1/4" it has no rust on the blades, they just have a dark tone from age. The handles are damaged and will need to be replaced. This is a collector knife and would be wonderful with replaced handles. The blade is stamped Schrade Walden NY USA and 835Y. I will take returns if your not pleased, and will only ship to the US only. Thanks

I suppose it is a good thing the blades showed no sign of rust, huh? Signs of going through the garbage disposal for a ride maybe. However, someone took a risk and won with a bid 2.83 and paid 3.00 shipping. I hope there is no blade play.

THawk, not in hand yet. I suppose it will get here by Saturday. I picked up a 832 as well, it may get here today or tomorrow. As soon as they get here (and assuming I have no technical difficulties), I will try and post pictures.

I'd enjoy finding out if the handles are cell or otherwise. The 832, now there is an interesting pattern. Look forward to seeing that one too. It came in several versions.

Okay, sorry about taking so long to get back to you good people. I have been trying to figure out the whole picture thing. Below are some pictures of the 835Y. Aside from a small crack at the center pin on one scale, the knife is in mint condition. It has seen some good pocket time already. Lovely little knife that is lightweight and takes a great edge.
