Hi Hey Featherstone !
Not a stupid Question !
The Combat Bowie's name says it all ! Although to tell the truth I have never seen any big difference between non task specific
large knives as being an outdoorsy knife or a military one. As a kid camper with a bad knife habit and too much time spent in the Army surplus store, I tested (age twelve) a ton of bayonets
and a ton of bad machetes & military knives as outdoorsy knives. Very few of them made the cut. Some do both jobs pretty well. The Camillus Marine Combat and the British bolo style Machete or the fixed blade Case Naval Survival Machete
(which is an awesome tool by the way) I found to be the best of the lot, in this respect. The Marine Combat is of course a slightly militarised Marbles style Bowie. I do not regard a small caper as a "military knife" but you can get a lot of soldiers tasks done,in some enironments with a four inch hunter. But the big middle is a lot of crossover territory. From what little I know about Afghanistan I Obviously feel the CU7 is an optimal set of
compromises. The Combat Bowie is at the high end in length
for the environment there but is only slightly heavier and would give two inches in reach and a whole lot of chopping, levering and bashing advantage.
How do you like your knives ? Through out our history US soldiers have shown a preference for BIG knives. We mostly win...hmmm. The Combat Utility is in my mind an updated Camillus Marine Combat and the Combat Bowie as an updated Rio Grand Bowie which is the knife Bill Moran Made for Ken Warner
to lug to Vietnam as the ideal set of compromises that environment posed. All are Damned good tools for both the military and civilian outdoorsman.
Thanks for the question.
All Best....
Ethan.
