Question on the Cabelas AG Vanguards.

About 7 years or so (I think) I had bought the AG vanguard. I sold it as I was getting into another brand of knives pretty heavy. A year later I bought another one. 3 years ago I sold it once again. I'm really considering getting another one. I've noticed that they are now etched or something and not the regular Buck 192 stamped into the blade. Why? The only knives I see like this are the AG. I look at the Buck site and see other s30v that have the model # and Buck stamped into. Anyone know the reason? Also how are the new AG Vanguards holding up? Are the handles an even color? I only own 2 AG and they are both stag 110's. I love them. Anyone have any they want to show?

Direct me to where I can see an "etched" tang stamp Vanguard. The Chinese counterfits on eBay have BUCK etched on the blade but they are not Alaskan Guides. You can email me if it'll run afoul of the "Deal Spotting" cops.

Heres a few photos I found off the bay of an AG. I even thought I had seen some posted on here last year but might be mistaken. I may even be using the wrong term for what looks to be etching to me.

Now these I found from just doing an image search.

Now this one to me looks like its stone washed under the coating and not the normal finish Buck use to use. Are these legit? If so I think the older way was much better looking.

Desotosky, I did find the thread I brought up last year on the subject. I thought I had discussed it before but couldn't find it. I geuss I have my terms wrong. I geuss the new ones have Buck printed on them not stamped or etched. Heres the thread. I still wish they were the old way but no sense in me whining about it.

Thanks for the pictures..... huh..... MY feeling is the same as yours. I collect Vanguards and have 30+ of them but not an Alaskan Guide yet, no reason, just random luck of what I find. This is the first I've seen Vanguards with printing instead of a stamp and it looks cheap. At some point I will add an Alaskan Guide to the collection, perhaps more than one if there is that much of a variation.

I kick myself for letting my other ones go. I might have to keep my eyes open for a lightly used one.I just went through a phase. There was some variations in them. The first ones were lighter colored with square spine and stamped. Then there were some with darker blade, squared spine and stamped. The last ones I looked at in person over a year or so ago were rounded spine but still stamped blade. If I remember it was so the coating to adhere to it better. Closest Cabelas is 2 1/2 hours away. Wish one was closer. If the blades were stamped like they use to be I'd be picking one up in a heart beat.

Anyone know what determines why they do it on some knives and not others?

I have a AG Vanguard that I ordered straight from Cabelas and it has the printed/etched logo. I've never noticed it until you brought it up in this thread so I pulled it out and sure enough. I will say that the handful of deer I gutted, skinned and butchered up didn't notice it much either:D I am curious to why they etch some and stamp others but I say that cleaning a deer knife with no indentations in the blade makes for easy cleaning. No gaps for for blood, fat or sinew to get stuck in.

I guess you have a point there. I never really thought about it being easier to clean. What's kind of comical to me is I have several Bark River and they are all acid itch and it doesn't really bother me. I'm not sure why it bothers me on the Buck, maybe because its not what I'm use to on a Buck. Anyhow I'm pretty sure I'll have another AG eventually. :D

The AG Vanguard got me into better knives and then I forsook the Vanguard. I think I will for starters try to keep my eyes open for a gentle used older one with the stamped Buck logo and if that doesn't work then go for a new one.

Here is one that has been posted befor that I have, look close at the blade and yes it is still that way.

Thank you for looking. HL

Wow, that's very interesting. Part of me would want to get it sharpened for use but then the other part of me would want to leave it as is for collector reasons. Nice find.
