Question on the Fire Kit

I've been using a relatively crappy knife to strike the rod, and it got me to thinking, does this damage the temper of a knife? And, in a survival situation, I'd use what ever I had on me, but what is a good striker for normal use?

Thanks!

Nope, it wont ruin the temper of a knife. try one of these as a striker

they work really well and can be used as a sharpener.

Here's the deal, yes striking a ferro rod can damage the edge and temper I would think but used as a lastch ditch method you would be fine. For practice I would use another striker.

I agree 100%

I like to have a dedicated striker and if I lose it , I know I can rely on the knife itself

I've been watching TTD's posts on this stuff and just got 4 of these delivered yesterday. Don't want to use knives for this unless it's a true survival event. JMHO

I use the awl on my SAK Farmer. Great striker and won't mess up your blade.

Update: Just got a handful of those superstrikers from marshall at goinggear.com. Nice demo, they'll come in handy.

Im a big fan of using these on a magnesium block.
It shaves off a nice little pile of magnesium quickly.
For a firesteel I use a P38 can opener works as a striker and a can opener too.

I'll keep that in mind. Burr: Any idea if JAX carries them? I'll have to try the P38. I've got one of those in my kit. Thanks for the speedy answers guys!

I'm another big fan of the strikers from goinggear.com. They're small, light, and cheap. They strike well, and the small plastic handle makes them comfortable to use.

I use the small blade from my SAK's don't really have a use for it for anything else.

English good, i do not speak, wow, I need some sleep.

I find the spine of my mora craftline allround works great, and if I do happen mess up the blade its $15 to replace.

Amroc: Jax doesn't have the strikers, only the P38. I've got extras if you want one.

I just had to tap a goinggear firesteel to replace my ESEE misch. I practiced with it so much I broke it in the middle (always gauge more in the middle of my steel.) I find that a 3/8"x5" fits the ESEE kit perfectly with lots of extra striking length. Thanks to Tony for helping me figure that part out.

Attach going gear striker directly to the fire steel with enough 550 so it can stay attached while striking, then it will never be necessary to use blade in emergency.

I got some P51's from countycomm.com-they're bigger than the P38's and I find them easier to use- I ground down the backside for a fire striker.

yup, i have a few of the goinggear strikers attached to my esee fire kit. misch metal globs supposedly burn at 5k deg f or something insanely hot and it sometimes sticks to the blade or striker so i'd say it can damage the blade's temper if used for practice frequently.

Interesting - I never got these to throw any sparks from a firesteel, so how do you do it? Use the blade of the opener?

As is it will spark but not well, especially the galvanized ones.
I have a couple of really old ones either ungalvanized or it has worn off.
Staglefty has the answer though, sharpen a spot!
I put a chisel grind on the long edge just behind the hinge.
