Question on the horizontal basic opening

I'm learning this move shown at Clay's site.

My question: I can't tell from the pics or the video if the opening is done with the latch handle flipping vertically (i.e., dropping down from the closed position and swinging over the back of the hand), or if it is done with the the latch handle swinging out horizontally and over the back of the hand (i.e., latch handle swinging from the palm to the back in a horizontal motion).

Please advise, as I have "learned" this technique using the horizontal motion, and wonder if I should actually be flipping it vertically.

Thanks!

Matthew

It's really a matter of preference. What is comfortable for you? When I do basic horizontals with my right hand, everything is in a horizontal motion for me. Same with my left. But that's just comfort. Maybe a verticle motion would be for aesthetics. But otherwise, whatever is comfortable and smooth is how I would go.

Yeah, it really doesn't matter much. What ever you like the most.

Practice both, that's the best way to practice. :)

I'd have to agree with these guys. Do what comes naturally. It's a matter of style, and I'd hate to see a thousand mini-versions of Clay's site walking around clickin' the same tune so to speak. If you really get down to it, there's got to be hundreds of different ways to do a horizontal opening. Now don't get overwhelmed! All I mean is that you could have your wrists, fingers and arms in one of a million different combinations of positions, and as long as you accomplish what you set out to do, I'd call that success. There is no such thing as an improper move, as long as you intened to do it. :) Most everyone here considers this an art more than a list of moves. Go with what feels right grasshopper. :D

Very wise teaching from the above. Reach out with your emotions...Feel the force flow through you.

Thank you, sensei :)

I shall now practice no-practice. I shall be thinking not-thinking, while swinging not-swinging. Does the bali really move in my hand, or is it merely the mind that moves? :D :p :D

Grateful I am!

Matthew

Good, do not try to flip the bali, that is impossible because it does not exist. Instead flip yourself.

There is no bali.

You have to let it all go, Starfish, Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind! :D:D

"So, whadda ya need, besides a miracle?"
"Balis...lot's of balis..." :D
