A buddy at work just got his thru the mail. On one side its diamond wood, on the other its plain black, what feels like plastic. Is this an error? I told him to keep it if it is an error.
Any insight would be appreciated.

If you could post a photo I'm sure someone on the forum could better answer your question.

I have one I just received. I'll check it out tonight. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't really check it out that closely before putting it in my case. It sure sounds like an OOPS to me though. Definitely one to hang onto.

What is it supposed to be?

Could be an error, or the diamond wood simply looks like plastic.

Take a magnifying glass to it, that may help to see if it's dark wood or plastic.

In a way, dymondwood is plastic. It starts as wood, of course, but its processed with acrylic or some other similar material that you could unscientifically describe as "plastic," so I bet it's just darker than the other side and all is well.

I believe that it's just difference's in the appearance of the same material. Here's a couple of photos (sorry, they are a little fuzzy) of three Dymondwood 301's. Top and bottom are the single blade models and you can see the difference in each one.

Well,
Since I started this whole 301 single blade affair I will offer comments. I am not a Buck representative, factory worker, salesman. I only send money to Buck, never have received any back yet. (Not counting my two a year discount)
So my opinion is only as a jake-legged Buck collector.

Opinion: These prototypes got extra polishing at factory. Hold up yours really to a bright light and look close for wood grains. These are plastic pressure treated wood...Moved around in regular room 'white' light mine looks a fair amount as plastic because of the polish, but isn't.

Here is photo from one of the other threads somewhere around here, it looks plastic to me but up close under bright light you can see wood grains.

Here is fair sized blow-up of said photo.

I would ask that you get knife under a bright light, I mean bright now, with magnifying glass look for wood fibers and let us know the outcome.

Plumb,

My favorite Dymondwood scales are the really, really light colored ones. For some reason I find that more attractive than the dark. I call it the "old barn wood" look....you have to search a little to find them. Yours are pretty close to the type...

I've put Dymondwood on buffing wheels and they buff up to a very high polish...just like plastic! No surprise there. :D

It looks just like the lower one in the pic that Plumberdv posted.
I guess its just has more wood grain on one side than the other.
Thanks for the insight guys. I will relay the messages.
