I am in the market for one of the black bladed larger CQB knives. I went to Knifecenter and am confused by the prices. The black ones are considerably cheaper than the non coated ones. What steel are the black bladed ones? I assume they are not ATS-34...? Also, is the larger, black bladed one available with the original kydex sheath anywhere?

Thanks-
Cam

The steel of the "black" CQB knives is 0170-6C...(The same steel used in the Becker BK series). These only come with the Propex nylon sheaths with the kydex insert. The prices are lower due to the use of the lower cost steel and the different sheath.

And in case you were wondering the kydex sheath from the CQB1 won't fit the carbon bladed model.
I tried the jr sheath on the CQB4 model and the blade is wider..
Apparrently the blade coating is enough to cause interference.
Too bad, otherwise I'd get a CQB3 and swap sheath duties with the CQB1.

Probably still get one and try to make a kydex sheath for it.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
