Question on throwing at lower targets...

While I am in the process of building/modifying my own target(s), I have to ask why the lower close to (or on) the ground targets like log rounds stacked?

I'm just wondering when I see such set ups like 4 plus log ends stacked, do you throw at the bottom one, and just release the knife much later in the swing?

This may seem like a dumb question, but as I'm just getting into throwing, I've been concentrating on like standard chest thru head height target area to release the knife just before my arm is parallel to the ground.

Not sure I'm asking correctly what I'm trying to get at, but advise however you view it.

Thanks,

Mark

Throwing at lower targets are a little harder. It is good to test your skill by throwing at different heights.

Thank you Bobby for the reply.... I'll keep that in mind as I improve. I'll add a lower log to my target board as well and give it a try.

So for the lower targets, say ground level, do you just release later (as in aiming at it somewhat) and that's all there is to it, relatively to the rest of form being proper?

If I could throw in a suggestion: Usually, where your follow through ends, your knife goes. I would suggest, yes, letting go later in your throw, but thinking of pointing your arm at the target by the end of it, much like how you point your arm at your chest height target normally (which, in turn, causes your arm to be parallel to the ground)

Thanks for the tip Renaissance, that was what I was looking for, and/or confirmation that I was understanding and throwing with some proper technique and accuracy. Couldn't throw today as it was still raining and generally a crappy day. Hopefully tomorrow if it dries out a bit, I'll get my yard work done, and work on getting my second log round mounted low on my target board.

I use old railroad ties sunk into the ground about 18" each with log ends attached at various heights. I regard this as a sport but if I was ever to throw at anything in defence it would almost certainly be a wild dog or pig. We have both around here. I have had my leg bitten and shoe bitten through both requiring many stitches. So for me throwing at lower targets is potentially more valuable than taller human height ones. There are 12 targets from ground mounted to the height of a man's head and I simply throw randomly while moving quickly around the yard. It is good exercise and gives a wide variety of heights, distances and throws.

If you throw with spin, then you ALLWAYS release knife when it is perpendicular to the you-target line. It doesnt matter where target lays. If it is lower, then this you-target line is not parallel to ground, but rule is the same.
It might looks like you release knife a bit later, but it is not.
