Want to start off by saying hi to you all, I am new to this forum. I am thinking of getting a TOPS CQT-Magnum and was curious if anyone has used one because they are not sold in stores here in California. I have to order it online.

Thankyou

It is one tough knife. Do a search under "TOPS" or "Magnum". You should find plenty of positive comments!

The TOPS CQT folders are very nice, high quality, and extremely solid. I just wish they would put a pocket clip on them.

I think OSO Grande had the best price I found, at about $159, but they don't ever seem to actually have any in stock...

I think knifemart carries TOPS knives. I was close to buying a TOPS 747 Magnum but got a Camillus Cuda Maxx instead. After the Maxx, I was thinking of buying the Magnum again but got a Strider AR instead. After the Strider, .....Hmm. ;)

Thanks guys!
I will get it, and I also have a knife that is the size of the TOPS but has a clip for your pocket. It is about 11 inches long. It is the cold steel voyager, xl tanto. A bad knife, but for some reason I got a "lemon" and the Blade chipped very easily. Cold Steel will take care of it, but the place I bought it at (the cutting edge in Ontario Mills) blew me off. I'll definitely never shop there again.

Oh well, thanks again

I had the 711 Magnum (Tanto) it was a large well built knife. There were two complains: No pocket clip and it was difficult to open. I sold it off and another forum member. Last I rememebr TOPS exchanged out the knife and the new one opened fine. I personally think that it is too wide for an EDC pocket carry knife.

Centurian,
I am definitely going to buy that TOPS, planning to go poick it up next week. I am one of those knife nuts who likes knives that are to big for edc, but still carries them anyways. I wouls carry my ka-bar tanto or ontario knives bowie if I didnt get weird looks for having a 15" knife hanging off my belt. That cold steel I mentioned was my edc until it chipped.

Kershaw: I'll agree with you on BIG knives, I normally carry either a Camillus Maxx, or a REKAT Sifu. Prior to that I carried (for years:) the Cold Steel XL Voyager Clip point and a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande. However, the TOPS while BIG it is very WIDE and heavy. I planned on putting a pocket clip on mine, but it has too much "bulk" for a pocket knife in my opinion. It is a great sheath or belt knife, possibly one of the strongest out there.

I just throw mine in my front jeans pocket. It replaces the "way-too-much-loose change" that was in there. It's actually lighter than all the change. ;)

kershaw72787: I own all of the ones we are talking about here. I have a Tops Magnum, SIFU (ATS and Green handle), Cold Steel 2XL Voyager, and the new Maxx 5.5.

I really like them all in different ways. The TOPS is the "baddest" looking of them all. It is also one tough folder. I have one of the very first ones without the cross hatching on the handle. The Maxx 5.5 seems to be just as tough but it is much more flashy in appearance (which can be good and / or bad).

Don't plan on comfortably carrying it in your pocket. It is a big, thick handled knife that is made for carrying in the ballistic nylon sheath that comes with it.

I can't understand why the knife got cross-hatched. The plain looking handle was one of the coolest things, and they no longer make them in cross hatch; either that or I can't find them. What is this Maxx 5.5 I keep hearing about? Did your TOPS come with a kydex or nylon sheeth.

kershaw72787: There are two changes, that I can see, on the more recent Magnums. The liner lock is now a slightly heavier guage steel than the one I have. Then they added the cross hatching. I guess the hatching was added for a better grip on the handle when wet. Mine is a bit smooth and slippery, so I assume the cross hatching is indeed an improvment.

You can order the Magnum with a kydex sheath, but I wanted the ballistic nylon style.

The Maxx 5.5 is the new big folder from Camillus. Check it out on Bayou Lafourche's site:

kershaw72787:

I have to agree with Jayharley, you really should check out the Camillus Maxx if the knife is going to be carried as an Every Day Carry knife, unless you like sheaths. The Camillus Maxx is well designed, has a slightly longer blade than the TOPS and it carries very low and discret in your pocket. It has a much thinner handle profile, so you put it in your pocket and forget about it. Plus and a very BIG plus it has a pocket clip.

The only thing I disagree with is that the TOPS looks more wicked than the SIFU. I don't know with the finger grooves and the shape of the blade, I think the Sifu is about the most "awsome" looking Mega folders out there :D

Have you looked at the Strider AR/GB knives? I have the AR, and it is the strongest folder I have come in contact with. If you want a large, well made, lifetime warranty knife (with belt clip) check them out too.

I can't comment on the others as I have only seen them in magazines. The Cuda Maxx looks pretty nice.

Sorry guys, but when I went to get the knife from Oso Grande's wherehouse, it was not at all what I was looking for. It was to bulky in the hand and looked nothing like the pictures I had seen. I like big folders, cold steel voyagerxl, but not the bulk. It wasn't what I wanted and I decided upon the MOD: CQD Duane Dieter Mark II.
