Question on USAF Pilots knife handle rattle?

I just got my USAF Survival/Pilots knife (Ontario 2-80) from an E-bay purchase today. Nice conddition, aside from a slight gap/space between the leather washer and the hex end of handle. VERY slight movement, just enough to annoy me. I suspect the leather dried out and shrunk a wee bit, causing the space, almost enough to slip a piece of paper into. How do I fix this? I though about putting a little super glue into the gap, to retighten it. What would you guys suggest????? Thanks!!!

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer, however I do have the same problem on some old US Mark 2 WWII knives. I will check some other forums and if I learn of anything I will post for you.

Please do the same for me.

Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

First rub in some mink oil or other leather oil on the handle since it has dried. This should hopefully lightly expand the individual leather washers and take up that little bit of slack. After the handle has absorbed the oil then seal it with as much Sno Seal wax treatment as it will absorb. Gob it on thick and use a hot blow dryer to melt it in to the leather. Keep melting the Sno Seal wax in until the leather will not absorb any more. This should keep the handle sealed for a good long time and prevent it from drying out again. Once a year or so just rub in a little more Sno Seal wax. I have done this treatment to my leather articles and it seems to work well.
Good luck.
Alex
