Question on using/modifying a Spyderco Vesuvius

I received my new Spyderco Forum Vesuvius, and I'd love to make it my work EDC. Can anyone share their experiences.

The blade has some side-to-side play when open, if I tighten it, it becomes difficult to open. Was anyone able to adjust so it's balanced (smooth and no play).

The point above the hole is sharp. Can I grind it down? If yes, how?

Thanks in advance,

If you cant get it adjusted, then there is possibly a more serious problem - email Spyderco about it, see if you cant send it back and get it fixed.

Some sand paper or even a whetstone will smooth over the sharp point.

The Vesuvius is the one Spyderco knife that I regret buying (kinda).

Why did I buy it after getting my hands on it in the store?
1) I love the blade shape.
2) I did'nt already own a Compression-lock knife for my collection.
3) The handle is extremely comfortable to hold and use.
4) It's a Spyderco, so you know it's a high quality knife.
5) It was my first USA made Spyderco knife.
6) The price was right.

Why do I regret buying the Vesuvius?
1) It's the only knife I have ever owned that actually came open inside my pocket. I think this is because it does not have a ball-detent--instead it has a milled section that the compression-lock liner presses against. If I tighten the pivot it will stay closed, but then the blade is hard to open.
2) Mine also had and has side-to-side bladeplay.
3) The handle flexes much more than I thought upon inspection before buying (after all, you can only test a knife so much in the knife store).
4) Yep, the thumb-ramp is way to sharp.
5) With locks like the Axis-lock, Frame-locks, Arc-lock, Ball bearing-lock, and good ol' fashion Lock-backs, I don't think the Compression-Lock is really a better lock.

Why am I gonna keep my Vesuvius?
1) It fills a place in my collection of knives with various locking systems: Compression-lock, lock-backs, Phantom-Lock, BladeLock, Axis-lock, Opinal collar-lock, Balisong latch-lock, Roll-lock, Liner-lock, Bolt-lock, Frame-lock, button lock, Pack-lock, ect...
What can I say, I'm fasinated by the various locking systems on knives. I probably need therapy.

I would love to see a stainless steel handle lock-back Vesuvius.
The blade and handle shape and designs are awesome!

Good luck,
Allen.

Allen, I am seriously considering buying a Vesuvius because
- I love the blade shape
- I prefer the very milled tang / liner engagement that you say you don't like (over ball bearing detentes)
- I like knives that are adjustable / disassemblable

I am concerned by the two reports of side-to-side blade play. You say "has" as in "could not rectify"? How bad is it, and why is it not fixable (if indeed it is not)?

Thanks,
---Jeffrey

For what it's worth, mine also had a small amount of vertical blade play when it arrived. Considering that I purchased a "factory second" I did not find that unreasonable. Spyderco warned me that this was not a perfect specimen before I ordered it.

The good news is that mine was easily fixed. I lubricated and tightened the pivot and now the blade is rock solid while still opening easily.
