question on VG1 vs. AUS 8

I have a CS SRK in aus 8 and am considering getting one in VG1. My question is if VG1 is really 2 or 3 "steps up" over aus 8? If it is only, say, one step up, then I will probably just keep what I have. Im not interested in getting a carbon v version off fleabay. Any informed insights appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Depends on what you are looking for.
I find that AUS8 is easier to sharpen to a razor edge; and, looking at the composition, should be more corrosion resistant. In this regard, AUS8 has a 1-step advantage.

I've done side by side edge retention testing, making draw cuts on manila rope. VG1 noticeably outperformed AUS8. The edge retention of VG1 matched that of VG10. I notice the difference in everyday usage for the type of cutting I do. In edge retention, VG1 is a couple of steps beyond AUS8.

Here is my edge retention test method and results for AUS8:

Thank you, Knarfeng. One point of clarification: when you say aus8 would have better corrosion resistance, does that mean that it will be more "stain resistant"? or, something different?
thanks again,
John

"staining" is surface corrosion, as is "patina".

Thanks again Knarfeng, and btw, I read your entire threads on testing on manila rope and appreciate your time and trouble to learn and pass along your findings.

In my experience, I have found Cold Steel's VG-1 to be a bit more corrosion resistant than their AUS-8. Of course thats a very small sample size, but both knives have been subjected to similar conditions with only the AUS-8 AK-47 showing rust(and it has developed at an alarming rate; dime sized patches near the tang). VG-1 does seem to be a little less tough, but wear resistance seems up quite a bit. Like I said before though, this is one sample size.

Who knows though, I may just be crazy.

ETA: I will agree with Knarfeng about AUS-8 being easy to sharpen, in fact it's one of the easiest I have come across. Not THE easiest, but certainly very easy to get shaving edges with.

If this was the original AK-47 with the ultralock, it may have been because of the bead-blasted finish. I've had few rust issues with any of my AUS8 blades but almost all my bead-blasted blades from various companies developed rust just sitting on their stands.
