Question on wire wrap handle

Hi guys,

I'm having some problems. When I finish the wrap I have a portion of my handle at both ends left exposed where I could no longer complete the full turn with the wire. Is this normal, or is there a technique I can use to fix this problem.

Although I've never done a wrap like this, I would make a ferrule for either end that would be a snug fit over the wire.

I thought of that too, and may have to do so. But I've seen wire wrapped handles that were perfectly done, and did not have ferrules or caps. Guess I'll just have to keep playing around un til I get it. You know, it's funny, you wouldn't think a simple thing like a wire wrap would be difficult, but I'm finding it to be a bit of a challenge.

A photo might help.

I just made a dagger with a twisted wire guard. Since it has a high and low place on each side ( like your twisted handle) there is a gap that can't be filled. I carved the handle to sit fairly snug into the guard. It isn't a flush seat, but better.

On a handle the twist will leave a wedge of wood exposed ( I think that is what you are talking about). There is no real practical way to eliminate this, so the trick is to blend it in. A bolster and cap will cover it. A thin ferrule on each end ,that is carved to match the spiral on one side and flat on the other, is also a good option. This ferrule would hide the spiral end best if it is the same material as the wire.

I wish someone would do a tutorial on how to do the braided wire sword hilts. I think I can probably do the twisted wire wrap no problem, but I really like the way they intricately braided the wires at either end of the handle....to the point where you can't even see where the wire begins or where it ends. I think that is neat.

Hi Stacy, yes, I'm talking about the section of handle left exposed after the wrap. I may have a way to elinimate that problem and will post my technique if it works, LOL.

RC, I am using 1/16th braided wire. It really, really looks nice.

Allen,

Thanks for posting that link.Tom has set a fine standard for wire wrapped handles, hasn't he? I see now how he is finishing off the beginning and end of the wire. Pretty neat. The way I've been wrapping is to secure the wire in a vise, pull it tight, and "walk down" the wrap on the handle. Works just fine, and I can keep the wifey out of the shop:)

This is the first I've done, but I like them so well that I am going to make them a common feature in many of my knives.

He sure has! I haven't done it myself but it wire wrapping can make for some really great knife/sword handles.

That is what I was referring to. The ferrule has a matching taper to the first twist.

Yes, I've got it, by Gosh. I'll drop by your table at the Harrisonburg show and show you the outcome, Stacy.

This is what I was referring to with the braided ends on the wire wrap, although I think this sword handle wrap is just cast out of an original of braided wire. Would like to know how they braid it like that originally though.
