Question on wrapping the handles

I've gotten a blank of aluminum cut out to roughly the shape of my MFS, for a training blade, it even will be able to use the same kydex sheath. I put holes in the handle to be able to put cord wrap around it so that the feel of the handle is pretty close to the MFS. My MFS came with the inter-twined cord instead of the straight across cord.

So I'm picking up some cord tonight to wrap my dummy blade. I'm checking out the "How to re-wrap your handle" page on the Strider web-site here:
http://www.striderknives.com/html/handlerapping.html

What I'm trying to figure out is how do you secure the second peice of cord on photo #2 and #4. How do you secure the ends on the top and the bottom of the handle?

Also do you guys have an estimate on how long the outer cord should start out at for the MFS handle? I don't want to get 3/4ths of the way through and find out it too short.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Good Day,

I just threw a Strider wrap on one of my blades, so I may be able to help....

What I'm trying to figure out is how do you secure the second peice of cord on photo #2 and #4. How do you secure the ends on the top and the bottom of the handle?

Just tuck the end under the wrap, it does not need to be real secure, becasue you will be putting the other wrap over it. Or you could do away with it..... In my case, the knife I put the Stider Wrap on did not need the extra bulk. And since you are working with a aluminum trainer, you are probably not worried about things getting through to the steel. But, on the other hand, with it being a trainer, you probably want to duplicate the feel the original as closely as possible.

Also do you guys have an estimate on how long the outer cord should start out at for the MFS handle? I don't want to get 3/4ths of the way through and find out it too short.

I just grabbed a length that was obviously too long. Wrapped it, marked the cord from start to end, and redid it.

I submit that you may want to redo it anyway, because the first time you may not get the ridge lined up like you want it, especially considering that you are working with two sides....

On mine, I did not do the included lanyard, the knife has two lanyard holes, so I tied the Strider wrap off, and I still have a hole free for a lanyard when I need one.

I appreciate your help Mr. Poff.

I haven't gotten to even playing around with it yet. Was busy all day today but I'm going to give it a go tomorrow during the day.

I'm still sanding down some of the areas that may snag and I'll do the cord as soon as that's done.

I'll take your advice and give it a whirl.

Thanks again
Ross T.

Hmmmmm I know Strider makes trainers for the larger blades, I wonder if they do the smaller ones like the MFS or the EBs?

ROSANGHAL,
Contact Strider I am sure they could make an exact replica trainer for you,
I have handled the MT aluminum trainer they sell and it was awsome, Same feel just a lighter weight obviously.

Getting a blank ATS-34 Trainer built by them would be cool also. I bet they could build it.

Hey there,
Hi MDP, how are you?

We do make trainers for the EB's. We even have them in stock.

Regarding the handle...

Practice practice practice...

Mick,

Excellent, thanks. Still trying to get a grip on it all. Frustrating at times, but never boring.

On a side note, when we met at the Eugene show, I parroted a comment from a novel, and while you may have no recollection of the comment, the memory has bothered me. Please forgive me.

I hope all is well down that way. And, if you ever decide to take a walk up this way, let me know.

Anyone ever thought about cord wrapping an EB-LT or the EB? Just a thought Mick any comments???

One thing I use when wrapping a handle is an extra long wire tie or zip tie. I place it on the tang and wrap over it then pull the end of the rope back to the top but under thet wrap by taping the rope to the tie. then I use a razor knife to cut it even. Make sure you put the rough side don't. It helps to grip the cord. But if you put it rough face up you will never get it out from under the wrap.

Thanks for the info Ryu.

I managed to get the wrap around my aluminum trainer after about 3 or 4 tries. It looks decent. Not as good as the one on my MFS but it's serving it's purpose. I used some pink :) climbing rope that worked great but I couldn't find any of the right sized cord for the inner cord that wrapped around the handle first.

I decided to try the wrap on my wife's EDC and that looked even better, feels great too. It now has a lot more comfy handle than the bare metal it had before the wrap.

I guess Mick was right after all. Practice, practice, practice :)
