If I build an AR-15 going the route of getting a dedicated .22LR upper and barrel, will I still need to get the Ciener conversion kit? Thanks!

Not if you buy a DEDICATED .22 lr upper.

If you buy a standard .223 chambered upper, then yes. But WHY? If you want a dedicated .22 upper then buy one that way!

.

Thanks! That makes things alot easier! Its just too expensive to shoot .223 these days as well as easier ammo inventory.

That is one of the nice things about an AR platform rifle, the ability to change caliber easily and without having to go through a dealer to do so. The AR uppers can be purchased without an FFL so you can save money by buying direct rather than through a dealer. With calibers available from rimfire up through .458 Socom or 50 Beuwulf you can build up a nice collection and always have a trigger you are use to.

What dedicated .22 upper(s) caught your eye? It seems like a year or two back there were many to choose from but when I looked a few months ago I didn't see much at all out there.

I'm also looking at .22 plinking with my AR. I would prefer a dedicated upper, but might resort to a conversion kit inside the 5.56 upper depending on cost/availability.

I have the Ciener and it works great in several AR's.
With a crome lined barrel I don't think a different upper is needed.

The main difference between a conversion and a dedicated upper lies in the barrel. 22 rimfire's bullets are smaller diameter than a .223, not by much but that along with twist rate can affect overall accuracy. The twist rate in a standard .223 barrel is too fast for non-jacketed 22 rimfire bullets. For the best accuracy and reliability, a dedicated upper is the way to go.

I'm not sure yet. I've just received MidWayUSA's recent catalog and saw a few dedicated .22LR uppers--but have yet to call them and ask if they are in stock.

I also live in CA, so I need to do some more research before I DROS that Stagg Lower receiver. However, it is my understanding that those assault weapons no-nos are for Centerfire rounds.

There is also a .410 Shotgun upper being made in Turkey for the AR lower. I have talked with the company and they are awaiting importation approval as well as trying to line up distributers. I think it would be fun in a fo-tenner....

I just saw an upper for the FNH 5.7mm round. The upper also takes the 50 round FN p90 magazine. The emptys drop down out the empty m16 mag well. Looks pretty slick if you are interested in the 5.7

They are calling it a AR-57 upper receiver
