I just received handmade that has a mirror finish. I noticed several places, e.g., the spine, butt end, and near the choil, where the finish is cloudy or milky-looking. There is a term for this but I can't recall it. I believe it's caused when the polishing or finishing wheel jumps or runs off the edge abruptly, sort of out of control. Please enlighten me :)

I saw your post in the Blade Discussion forum. ALmost posted saying you should ask your question here. Surprised you have no answer. Sorry I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your questions. Sometimes I read about "orange peel" effects on steel. Could that be what you meant?

Were I in your shoes, I would simply get on the horn or e-mail the maker of your knife and describe the problem, and ask him if he can fix it. The vast majority of makers want to make their knives right. They recognize that an unhappy customer can cause them real damage, in terms of future sales. Give him an opportunity to demonstrate good customer service, and help his reputation for doing the right thing.

Once in awhile one of my knives has a cloudy spot like that and I don't notice it until later. Part of the problem is not seeing the spot except under a certain kind of lighting. If it's pointed out to me, I'll go fix it.... Just takes a few minutes. But if it's really orange peel rather than a cloudy spot, that's a whole 'nother story and much harder to deal with.

I agree with Bugs. Contact the maker and mention the spot to him.
