Question re: replacement scales

I've seen posts about replacing a plain scale with a graphic (there's one in the for sale forum now). I had previously called CRK and was told the knife had to be sent in for hand fitting. Has anyone switched scales between Sebenzas without having them hand fitted by CRK?

Richard, I tried switching scales once but learnt the hard way that the lock side is custom-made to fit the blade, so that the lock-up is perfect. When I switched, the lock failed to pass the spine whack and instead cut into my hand deeply - youch!. But when the blade was mated with the "proper" scale - the lock up was bank vault solid!

I would suggest that you don't attempt to switch the scales (especially not the lock-side). I think Anne/Bridget have posted on this before sometime back.

No offense meant, but I know I wouldn't waste my time trying to second guess the CRK team.....if they say send it in for hand fitting, follow the Nike axiom and JUST DO IT!!! ;-)
IMHO, Chris and his crew have probably forgotten more about lock geometry than a lot of maker's will ever know!

Rich,

The graphic scale in the for sale forum belongs to me.
Changing the front scale from one similar sebenza to the other is very simple and not a problem since as we all know CRK has some of the closest tolerences in the industry.
I have had this front scale on a NICA tanto, large regular and a Mayonized sebenza. All had perfect (unchanged) fit and lockup since the rear locking scale and blade alignment are not touched. Since the rear scale and blade on each individual sebenza are mated to each other as a set, to attempt to switch either would be foolish as well as hazardous.

If anyone is not sure of their abilities, I agree that it would be wise to send the items to the experts at CRK.

thanks
dave

you might get lucky with the fit, but CRK's tolerances are just too tight and the chances are slim that it would be a perfect fit

Hey All,

Thanks for the repies. Guess I'll send it off to CRK, have it refurbed and a graphic scale added.

Rich,

The following is a direct quote from the experts at CRK dated 12/19/01:

Sebenza blades are not automatically interchangeable. Each blade is individually fitted to each lock - that is one of the factors that sets Sebenzas apart from others!!

You should be able to switch the front face (handle slab) without a problem, but keep the blade and the lock together!
