Anyone,

What's the most versatile sheath you've found? Versatile in terms of the number of ways to discretely carry a small folder or fixed blade? Any recommended combination of knife/sheath makes or models? (and where to find them, too, please.)

Thanks!

One can build a certain amount of vesatility into a sheath, but a lot of times, the more funtions you try to put into it, the less it does any one of them well. A sheath hung inverted on a pack strap needs more tension holding the knife than one set up for self defense or IWB carry, where speed of deployment is an issue. Multi-positional sheaths usually require larger belt plates to accomodate the different positions and generally adds bulk to the whole package. Most knives will be carried one, maybe two ways, so it's better to make the sheath fit the use, than to make a bunch of compromises which will take away from the main function of the piece. Just my $.02.

Knife maker Bud Nealy offers a practical multi-carry Kydex package that truly works as he's designed it to. Very nice.

I've always liked leather sheathwork and there are a number of excellent leatherworkers out there doing custom leather for one's knife. Keep it simple / Security, Carry, and ease of draw / return to sheath.

TOPS Knives offers excellent Kydex work with their knives. My Sea Wolf sheath is one of the best I've ever carried.

As noted, keep it simple, sturdy, and clean. Too much is just that...too much.
