Sometimes I enjoy a good story as much as the next person.

But (and?), isn't the "Carl's Lounge" Sticky the place for, among other things listed, "Traditional Knives 'Tales & Vignettes'"?

Fiction threads have been appearing in the main section as of late, and while I understand the appeal, to me such posts seem more fitted to the above Lounge (as described and Stickied) than interspersed among threads of current discussions, pictures and real-life anecdotes.

But perhaps I misunderstand the purpose of The Lounge?

Thanks for any clarification.

Gary and I hear you and share your concerns. We are struggling for balance in the forum. Haven't found it yet, though we have redirected a number of threads to various nooks and crannies in BF. (and have gotten a few complaints about that, as well.) Bear with us as we continue to figure it out.

I like 'em just like they are -- please don't change a thing. The stories are much easier to find (and less likely to be buried) as threads, not as posts in the Lounge.

Actually, I don't like it when one of my stories gets shunted off to the lounge. If I'm going to go through the trouble of writing a story for the guys, I want it out where any visitor to the forum can see it that day with no trouble, not burried away. I didn't mind the forum for just off topic chat that some mods didn't want to see on the forum, but I'm not a fan of it. This place is a very unusual forum in it's civility and maturity. I don't feel it needs over moderation.

Carl.

I feel the stories are one of the major points that make this forum so special. Although I understand the desire to organize things, I think the stories would get lost in a single post.

I would like to see the stories left where they are. It brightens my day when I run into a new one.

I tend to agree, although I have no gift for story telling I genuinely enjoy the stories from Carl or any of the other guys in this area. I count it a treat to be browsing the threads and cross a story such as the one from Jonny Twoshoes today.

I know we are here to talk about our love of knives but, just my .02, without these stories the traditional area would lose some of its homey feel.

100% behind Carl. His stories are the best of what goes on in this forum.
The stories are very traditioonal knife related IMO.

Up until "blues" and "gus" left, "Jackknife" was the only one allowed to post stories (long stories) in the Traditionals Forum and then someone (memory fails me) would put "jackknife"s" stories in the Sticky titled Jackknife's Tales. All other stories belonging to others were immediately sent to "Carls Lounge". Personally, I'd like to see it go back that way.

Of course a short story of perhaps a paragraph is needed in some of these threads to tell about an event of the day but the long ones ought to go straight to "Carls Loundge". Just my .02¢ and yes, I know I'm kind of a grouch.

Maybe I am in the minority here but I agree with Carl. This forum seems to have a lot of folks that have the sense to moderate themselves. I have never come across a thread that is a short story and had it spoil my morning.... quite to the contrary actually. Either way I think its silly to get upset over an online forum. I think let it go, but whatever will be is not going to ruin my day.

Same here. We do a decent job of self moderating, not to minimize the great job the moderators do as well. There is a rare occasion that things get out of hand (when certain ones visit), but, for the most part, it seems a simple reminder goes a long way in the subforum. I also am really enjoying the stories by Carl and others. I think we're fine, and don't need changes, but I won't fight over it either. Whatever the moderators decide, I will abide by.

maybe a little late to this conversation
but home from work now and throwing in my 2 cents

I also agree with Carl, if all his stories were shunted off to "the lounge" i may never have found and read them
and I may never have stuck around long enough for the traditional bug to bite...

but theyre no different than any other thread, if it doesnt interest ya theres a bunch more that might:D
personally I dont see them as inappropriate to the spirit of the forum, if i'm not interested in a post, like say anything about trappers  then i just move on, looking for whaler or toenail talk:D
just my two cents

Carl's stories don't get shunted of to "The Lounge". They are sent to "Links to Jackknife's Tales" a sticky at the top of page 1 of the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blade Forum. Click it and you can read all Carl's stories.

if it's not good pics of knifes then the stories are why i come here. Leave them an thanks to the folks that write them (carl)

Gents, lets get this straight.
There is no "Carl's side"
There is no "moderator's side".
If you think otherwise, you need to re-think the situation.

Gary and I have discussed this issue off line several times. We both agree that, while this is a forum devoted to knives, we are comfortable with a few off-topic threads. Lately there have been more than a few, including this one. So we have been concerned. That does not mean we are going to shut them down or move them. It does mean that we watch the volume of them carefully and take action if we feel it appropriate.

This thread is done.
