Why do the sellers delete the price of a knife on this fine website when they edit their post to say it is sold? I would prefer if they would leave the last offer selling price up. I try to research any knife I buy to see what the actual going rate is for any make, model, pattern etc. I use Ebay for this, as well as the exchange forum. I also use Nextag as a resource for new items. If it is a rule then I understand, if not a rule, it would be nice if the I'll take it price is left up. Just wonderin' that is all. I hope General is ok for this thread.

a good question. i've wondered he same thing myself and cannot offer a good answer.

when i have sold a knife on the Exchange, i deleted the price as a courtesy to the buyer, since they may not be anonymous and may not want others to know what he paid. most people don't care but it's easier than asking.

also, deleting the price keeps people from getting confused as to which items are still for sale.

personally, i'd rather that all sale prices stay visible, and that all "sold" threads get locked immediately, as i too like to use the Exchange as a market test of a knife's value. however, that would be a lot of work for the mods and it would still not prevent dishonest sellers from fabricating a fraudulent sale just to inflate the value of a knife they might be thinking about selling.

Should we all start driving around cars with the sale price sprayed on the door? If you buy a pair of jeans at Sears they don't make you wear the price tag around still glued to them. Same thing here--it's nobody's business what a buyer paid me for my goods.

It also protects you from looking silly to the rest of the BFC community if you accidentally price a knife too low like a noob, or if you pay way too much for one like (again) a noob.

Or if you get lucky buying a real steal and want to turn it around a couple of weeks later at a rape-level profit, which is your absolute right to do. Deleting prices protects you from a potential buyer nagging you with crap like "I know you only paid X for it so why are you asking Z?" "Because that's what the original seller SHOULD have asked if he was well-informed."

To have a market, a functioning market, economists say you need two things:

First, you need a place and time where buyers and sellers can regularly and reliably meet. For the New York Stock Exchange, for example this 11 Wall Street, New York, New York 10005. And the time is 9:30AM to 4:00PM weekdays except designated holidays. Many modern markets don't have a physical place and time, but they still need a virtual place. Bladeforums is one such market place for knives.

Second, you need open information. The NYSE has its famous "ticker." Every transaction goes over the ticker for everyone to see. And if you miss something on the ticker or want to research something in the past, all transaction records are available for everyone to see. In this way, the market can establish the true value of an asset.

If you don't have these two things, you don't have a market.

When sellers remove prices, they are removing our "ticker" and it becomes impossible for anyone to establish the true value of any knife.

True value is what someone WILL pay for it, not what price is or is not left for everyone to see. Say someone had a fire sale on a gen 2 XM-18 .... and it sold for $400, now if the seller leaves the price up it really does not matter... Most people around the hobby know they run $750-$900. Could go the other way also, someone listing the same knife for $1500 and it sells, seller leaves the price up, now is the new standard $1500?

No, again most people know they go for much less.

"True value" us what it's worth to you.

I sold a few spydercos the were once in production (Im sure most of us have :)), well as you know once they get disco'ed they shoot up in price pretty fast. So the NIB Manix that sold for $125 a few months ago, is now worth $180-$225. That listing price of that past thread is no longer good for research... Well unless you want to see how fast the prices went up :D

Then there is the fact that probably 50% or more sales are not sold for the listing price... Should the buyer edit the price for the selling price? IMHO it's nobody's business what the real sale price was. The sale is between two people and that's their business, not the whole forums... IMHO

I'm glad Spark leaves it up to us
