Question regarding finish abnormality on rainbow leek.

I had just purchased the rainbow leek and noticed a strange
abnormality in the finish near the pivot point on the top scale
of the knife. Is this a normal flaw in the manufacturing
process or is it a rare occurrence. The back scale of the knife has very
uniform color and is virtually flawless but the top has the distracting
blob near the pivot. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing like that on my sister's Rainbow Leek, or on a friend's Rainbow Leek and Chive. Send it in (or take it back) and I'm sure they will replace it.

I remeber someone who posted abou the same thing awile back, he sent it and and they sent him a new one I think...thats what I recall:rolleyes:

Welcome to the forums!! The rainbow leek's finish is done by bodycote in a random pattern so no two are really exactly alike. If the finish on your knife is not to your liking, I would give them a call or e-mail and exchange it for another. Here is the contact info for ya:

Wow, now that is some quick responses! I went ahead and emailed
Kershaw on this and now awaiting a response. Sounds like their
customer service is very good.

I had one about 4, or 5 months ago? that had some of the finish missing, and some "bubbly" looking places in the finish. I sent it back, and they sent me a new one!!!

Their customer serivice is outstanding!! I would suggest that you call them first (phone # is in the warranty paperwork) and explain the problem to them. When I did this the person I talked to said I could send it to that persons attention. Worked out well I had the knife back in a couple of weeks after sending it!!!

If you look at the pictures of the Rainbow Leek in Kershaws 2003 catalog, they have what I think you're talking about near the pivot. I think it's a normal part of the process. I would think twice about exchanging it if you like the rest of the knife. Everyone of them is different, and you might not like the one you get in return.

Being that my wife and I have 3 'Leek's' between us, but no Rainbow's yet, if anyone is looking to ditch theirs...well, you know who to contact now...lol

Mine has a little color swirl by the pivot. I thought of sending it back but decided to keep it because it gave the knife charactor and a one of a kind look. I guess if it was worse that it is, I would have sent it back.

If you talk to Kershaw, they'll tell you any abnormality in the finish is a manufacturing defect and... to their credit... they'll replace any leek with a screwy finish.

The downside? You're one of about 20 people on this board I've heard complain about various quirks in their Rainbow Leek finish (another very common one is for there to be places uncoated on the spine of the blade)

While the Rainbow Finish is kind of neat, it seems pretty obvious to me that it's hard to apply correctly.
