Does anybody know of any custom knife maker that is set up to properly temper (Non-differentially) INFI or VG10 steels properly?

Is there any particular reason you want VG10? INFI I understand, it has a mystique about it.. but VG10 is a run-of-the-mill, not even top-of-the-line anymore, stainless. There are plenty of makers working in S30V, S60V, ZDP189, I'd bet there are even some using SG2... so why VG10?

First, i think you mean heat treat, tempering is used to take the brittleness out of hardened steel. Second, INFI is proprietary, buy a Busse knife if you want it. Last, almost any steel can be heat treated for the public, just talk to paul bos.

Your question doesn't really make sense. Why don't you try to put your goal to "properly temper" VG-10 and INFI into context of your requirements.

INFI is a proprietary steel, only Jerry Busse has access to it. VG-10 is very difficult for American custom makers and collectors to obtain as well, I don't know of a single non-Japanese custom knifemaker who offers it as a blade steel option.

That being said, if you can provide the VG-10 and its heat treat schedule for the maker, I'm sure anyone who does their own heat treat can do it. I'm also sure that Paul Bos knows how to do it, too, he has handled many steels that most people have limited to no access to.

I think it's not so easy to track down the heat treat for VG10 in English and outside of Japan...I tried a couple of years ago. the new CPM154V has almost similar properties to VG10, so most US/Euro makers would prefer to offer that.

Conversely, many Japanese makers offer / use VG10, instead of CPM154V.

As for INFI....you have to buy a Busse (or certain Rat models) to have access. Is INFI better than other properly HT steels like 52100, CPM10V, CPM15V so that you can consider them as alternatives? I don't know.....the Busse tests and those done by others seem to keep the guessing game going.

I do like INFI...it's a carbon steel that seems to be very rust resistant. Just nice for the tropics.
