Question regarding Khukuri measurement

Well, since things are slow here lately I'll ask a question.

Yesterday I got in a Samsher that Yangdu stated was 17" OAL.

I was wondering what the current philosophy was on measuring the OAL.

If I measure from knife tip to the bottom point of the buttcap I get 17" exactly.

If I measure from knife tip to the top point of the buttcap I get 18" exactly.

Of course, this means if I measure along the radius of the buttcap I get a continuum of measurements from 17" to 18".

Are we determining overall length from tip across to the bottom point on the buttcap, or the greatest length it is possible to measure?

Eric.

AFAIK, the standard measurement is still as described in the Khukuri FAQ:
The overall length of a khukuri is measured from tip to butcap, in a straight line, unless otherwise specified. When someone speaks of a 20" Ang Khola, this is the measurement they are speaking of.
Khukuris are measured as the crow flies from the center of the butt cap where the tang is peened over straight to the point.
The handle is measured from where the tang is peened over to the center of the bottom of the bolster and the blade is measured from the center of the bottom of the bolster to the point. This sometimes causes a discrepancy between the over all length and the lengths measured separately. - Yvsa

(Apologies in advance)

I was going to say something along the lines of: When determining the length of one's khuk, one should always use the greatest length it is possible to measure.....

... but then I decided against it.

It always pays to read the FAQ - again, duh!

In that case, I get 17.5" OAL.
