Question regarding leather sheaths

I have 2 questions actually,

  1. I bought some new Schrade sheaths on eBay that are probably unfinished, as they have no color or other leather treatment. What can I apply to give them some color and protection without causing harm? What additional step did Schrade undertake before they would have normally sold them, did they dye them?
  2. I also have some old sheaths that have seen better days. Some are just dirty, others are really grungy and badly scuffed. Is there a product that will clean and restore these without making the leather soft and floppy?
Thanks as always.

I bought some of those unfinished sheaths as well. Before you do anything with them, check the retainer straps for size. Several of mine were too small to work. I told the seller about it, and he checked his stock, sure enough, about 1/3 were that way.

Sheathmaker posted about leather finishing/cleaning/treatment a while back. I am going to send him my unfinished sheaths to finish, and lengthen the straps.

The items you would require can be found at Tandy Leather goods. Often an old shoemaker ( if you can still find one ) can be a wealth of information. Also we are gifted in that we have our resident expert in this field Sheathmaker for info and help. Frankly I believe Codgers answer is the best Sheathmaker is the man so perhapes that is the way to go. LT

I thought I remembered reading that, but couldn't find the thread before I posted this.
