Hello. Was wondering what the grit of the Spydie ultra fine stone was. It seems to be the same price as a diasharp, though idk. One site said 2000 which doesn't seem right since the fine rod I have feels pretty damn smooth and on the same site is 1800. Trying to figure out if I want to fork over the money for a Norton 4000/8000 water stone, a diasharp that is 8000 or try to find more wet/dry paper in that range.

Trying to not spend $$$$$$ and have something that is good. Hope everyone is doing well.

Get the UF ceramic its well worth it, its around 3 microns or about 8000 grit.

Woot! And I don't have to soak the damn thing in water lol. And it is $30 less or so. Think I need anything in between 1200 and 8000? Too much of a gap?

I have a DMT Duosharp. So 3 micron is 4000? In any case, that sound more like it.

Spyderco ultra fine is the same stone as fine (FYI: which is basically the same composition as the "medium" - only with added enzyme to "open" cells and some charcoal to change color), only (surface) finished finer. Al2O3 particles are 1-5 microns in size, but the sharpening effect is mainly affected by surface finish instead of particle size.

As many have noted, though, the density is different between the fine and ultra-fine. Hold them both in hand. Flick them and listen to the note they sound. Very different.

I don't see any benefit of this over stropping with a medium, and then a fine compound loaded leather - but that's just me.

I do, however, see the benefits of the diamond stones.

It gives you a sharper edge before stropping and It takes time off the stropping process.

not a bad chart for US grit, people generally go to Japanese waterstone convention at the polishing grits. That's why many say Norton 8K is like 4K in other brands.

I know what your saying, every company seems to have their own definition of grit.

Ah well, I went with a King 8000 grit stone. I looked at the Norton 1000/8000, was hoping for the 4000/8000 but it wasn't there. I have to admit 1000 felt a lot less smooth than you may think and 8000 felt good, but not amazing. The King stone I got is SMOOOOTH and o so nice. Made my straight razor truly sharp. Was about $40 too for a 3x8" more or less. All is good, more technique anyway....time to masta the ancient japanese art of sharp stuff, waahaayeeehooo :-)
