Question regarding "Spyderedge".

Why is it that only one side of the spyderedge is beveled? I have been curious about this for some time. Any ideas/answers.

And while we're at it, why is the pattern "one big, two small"? Is this the absolute way to go, as it seems to be the pattern for every manufacturers' serrated edge (I seem to recall a one plus three somewhere but that's it).

serrations have been around for quite a while. In Nature, we find them on the edge of leaves, around shark's teeth, Lobster's claws, etc. Uneven serrations are more common than even ones.

We've traced the multiple size serrtions in knives back to Germany pre WWII, although I'm sure even that's been around for quite a while.

They were originally made popular here by Popeil's "feathertouch" knife which used one large and one small (like the early German design) serration pattern.

One large and two small began with John Spiker (a knife salesman) and Scott & Fetzer (knife factory - Sharpcut & Ginsu).

We first learned to sharpen the serrated edge (Sharpmaker), then we began producing them on a good steel in 1982 With our "Mariner" Model.

They are only bevelled on one side because it is more practical. We've made some prototypes models with double bevels, but there was little difference over single bevel.

hope that helps.

I think that one of the reasons for the single bevel on the spyder-edge, is because it is easier to sharpen, than a double bevel would be. (Ya only need to sharpen one side.).

I sharpen both sides of my serrated Endura. I thought thats what my book said to do, but now I need to double check it.

Thank you Sal, an informative answer as usual.

Re: sharpening serrations. I'm a firm advocate of the 4 strokes on the serrated side and one deburr stroke on the other after watching the Spydervideo.

Cool, thanks for the answers. I am getting my Marlin on Tuesday and I also purchased a Sharpmaker kit. Now one more question, since I have not seen one. Is the plain edge portion of the blade also single bevel or is it double?

Munky,

It depends on the knife, if the plain edge segment is very short like the Lightweight Native it is sharpened on one side only just like the serrated section. If the plain edge is longer as with the Wegners the plain edge is sharpened on both sides.
