serrations have been around for quite a while. In Nature, we find them on the edge of leaves, around shark's teeth, Lobster's claws, etc. Uneven serrations are more common than even ones.
We've traced the multiple size serrtions in knives back to Germany pre WWII, although I'm sure even that's been around for quite a while.
They were originally made popular here by Popeil's "feathertouch" knife which used one large and one small (like the early German design) serration pattern.
One large and two small began with John Spiker (a knife salesman) and Scott & Fetzer (knife factory - Sharpcut & Ginsu).
We first learned to sharpen the serrated edge (Sharpmaker), then we began producing them on a good steel in 1982 With our "Mariner" Model.
They are only bevelled on one side because it is more practical. We've made some prototypes models with double bevels, but there was little difference over single bevel.
hope that helps.
