Question regarding thumbstuds

Regarding the Benchmade thumbstud knives, are they ambidexterious? If so, do they have the pin protruding on both sides of the blade, or is it configurable on which side it protrudes?

I'm wondering because I might sometimes have to use my left hand, and sometimes my right, to open the knife.

Thanks,
-Ivan Yulaev

Yes, as far as I know all BM's with thumbstuds are ambidexterous. I happen to like BM's thumbstuds quite a lot, some studs on some knives are good or bad depending on the design.

I hope that helps,

-John

No! Not all BM's have ambidexterous thumb studs. I have a Mini TSEK which I removed the single stud from. The hole that was left was tapped only on the left side (for right handers) of the blade. I wish that they would make all of them right and left handed usable. I personally like the disk used on the Stryker models.

No! Depends on the model. I THINK (don't take my word on it) all current models are ambi, but other models, even recently-discontinued models aren't neccessarily ambi.

I have a BM Leopard that is right-hand only and a Pinnacle that's right-hand only.

On all of them there's a screw that you can take out and switch them, but I tried it on my Pinnacle and it didn't work because there was a recess to accept the stud on only one side of the blade and it just didn't look right on the other. Perhaps it's the same on the Leopards. I haven't tried.

I've been sensing that the industry is moving more to hole-opening knives... (Thank you Sal Glesser!) ever since I saw that new Strider folder with both.

I seriously hope to see more BMs with holes instead of studs and, if I had to guess, I think they'll offer more oval-hole knives.

BUT, since they've been so VERY secerative about their new realeases we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd bet money that they're going to make at least a couple more oval-hole knives though. I'll buy 'em!:)

I believe the correct answer is it depends. The linerlock knives have only a thumbstud setup for righthanders, but the Axis Lock knives are setup for both ambidextrous thumbstuds and lock actuation.

The Stryker models are right handed liner locks but they have a disk for opening with either hand. I believe that at one time, there were some left handed Strykers. In fact I need to check their web site to see if they still make the "lefties".
