Question: rehandling an old kitchen knife

My ex-employer has an old carbon-steel kitchen knife that he adores (it belonged to his grandmother, and its so _thin_ that it cuts better than anything else he's handled). Problem is, after decades of improper handling and dishwasher cycles, the wood scales have just about fallen apart, and the tang is badly rusted. Removing the old scales and rivets I can do, along with getting rid if the rust. Replacing the scales, though, is something I've never done. I'm trying to give the owner a couple of options, and a professional rehandling is one of them. So here's the question:

About how much could he expect to pay a knifemaker (preferably local to the North Jersey/New York area) to rehandle a tapered-full-tang knife? No fancy materials required. I'm gonna instruct him in the finer points of not-leaving-knives-to-soak and keeping-them-the-hell-away-from-the-dishwasher. ;)

Thanks!

55 bucks delivered. Oak scales. I'm in WV. If interested please respond by email. I may have already over stepped my bounds by quoting a price here.

Roger, you are not over stepping your bounds! I have never charged less than $50 for replacing a knife handle on jobs like mentioned above.

Oh I thought he was a deer obstetrician. You have to handle a lot of doe to get 55 bucks.

Don't mind me - just one of my moods again.

Grover, I wouldn't think it would be out of place, at all. After all, we are all in this together. All of us have questions when it comes to knife making.

Thanks, John,

I usually watch a forum for a while before posting, but I broke that rule this time. I was afraid I'd accidentally crossed a line. :(
