Question(s) about the griptilian

I recently purchased a 551 griptilian from REI on a bit of an impulse buy but I do like it a lot. I just have a little bit of a side to side blade play issue. It's nothing that isn't tolerable but I keep hearing it should look up solid. I've tried tightening the pivot but it's stiff. Again nothing too bad but would like to fix it if I can so I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Also where are all these amazing G-10, micarta and carbon fiber scales I always see people with :D

Thanks everyone stay sharp

I like your handle Waldamir, sounds like something from the Fellowship of the Ring. First, I know REI well, and they have a no questions asked warranty. Benchmades come from the factory hand assembled. Made in the thousands there are usually adjustments made by many of us upon arrival, like the pivot and handle screws. Some of the techs use Loc-Tite liberally, others don't. So I would give the knife a week or so and just play with it; get to know it. But if it continues to bother you bring it back for an exchange. On the scales, you will find many with these factory made in G-10, but in Micarta or carbon fiber these tend to be either Limited editions or the product of a small handful of custom makers seen in many photos on this site. There's my input and good luck with the new Grip!

Thank you jKarp. Like I said it's not that big of a deal. My beloved PM2 has some up down play it it doesn't bother me at all. I do seem to have to loctite the pivot. I think I have a tube of red loctite laying around somewhere. Will this work?

I would NOT use the red formula which would make the chemical bond hard to break...use the blue 243 formula instead and sparingly. Also a trick, pull the pivot out with your T10 driver and wipe the threads before applying that drop or two and once screwed back in find your sweet spot and then let it sit overnight. For me it's simpler to use Loc-Tite when necessary over plumber's tape or other methods. Good luck again!
