Question: Small Sub-hilt

I really dig the sub-hilt style fighters. My question is has anybody heard of any that are a little smaller in size? Most of the ones I have seen sport a longer, at least by urban carry standards, blade. I would be curious if anybody has heard about some being made with a smaller blade say five or less inches. One of the reasons I ask is that, number one I like the shape and feel but I definetely prefer a smaller blade. Just more comfortable for me. What are your feelings on the subject? Also, for me I recently had an accident in which my hand slipped onto the blade of one of my smaller knives and I had to have surgery to re-attach some tendons. (not fighting or anything, just trying to fix something and being very stupid.) So now I am very leery of any smaller knife without a solid guard or choil of some kind. Anybody out there heard of a small sub-hilt fighter?

Blackjack makes a subhilt, Classic #5 which has a 5 1/2" blade.
Cool little knife.

Aside from the Blackjack 1-5 that Randy mentions, there are no other current in production sub-hilts that I am aware of.

Your only other option is to go with a custom maker. :)
That'll open up a lot of options for you. There are a fairly decent number of makers on this forum that might welcome the oppurtunity to tackle that job. Good luck!

All the best,

Thanks so much for all your help guys.

I looked for the black jack but it must not be a regular offering from them. Although that Blackmoor Dirk is a sweet little knife. I was hoping to get one without paying hand-made prices but it looks like that's where I'm at which in truth is appealing as hell. I'll start looking into makers any suggestions? Looking for something really simple. Incidentally if you search ebay under subhilt there is a beautiful double edge fighter with an ivory handle but a little too fancy for me and a little too pricey too! Still, sweet little piece. ;)

Get in touch with Justin at Ranger Knives: he loves an interesting project, and makes great knives.

There is a maker name De Leon out of Texas I believe. I had a couple of smaller sub-hilts he made but foolishly let them get away. Nice knives. Jim at Treeman knives sometimes has some of his knives and maybe he could guide you to contacting De Leon.

Just drafted an email to Justin at Ranger Knives. Great stuff and about what I was looking for. Simple but funtional. I looked at De Leon but it was a little more that I was looking to spend for a already made knife let alone a custom job. Plus I am not concerned with looks at all, he makes beautiful knives. I mean gorgeous. Wish I could afford one. Also the ones I saw all looked a little bigger than I wanted. Thanks everybody for all of your help. If I can get this knife made I'll post a pic for everybody to enjoy. Thanks again.

justin.

Great stuff. If you can't get a picture up, see if Justin can put a picture on the Ranger Knives Forum.

All the best,

So, the knife is still in the works. I dropped the ball a little this week and forgot the reply to an email. But we've been chucking ideas back and forth and it's shaping up knicely....

Have you seen the Greco Whisper Clip Tip?

I wouldn't quite call it a sub-hilt, but it locks the knife into your hand. And you can't beat the price! If I ever get a grinder, I will grind off the top guard of one of my CT.
Huh... mine came w/o a top guard, if I remember correctly. I haven't seen it in almost a year... I'll get some pictures next month. The handle is slightly smaller than I would like.

Justin,

I had similar thoughts a few years ago. You may wish to look them over as you design your knife. See http://www.aolisi.net/knives/WASP.htm .

I'll look forward to seeing what you end up with.

Take care.

I like the use of horn, howard. Especially that unusual one near the bottom. A nice naturally occuring shape. The grip possibilities for the second set of photos is nice. Thanks for sharing them. Also looked at those pictures from the Riddle of Steel. Beautiful scenery. Also, when looking for a double edge I wanted something with two distinct edges for a more varied defensive possibilty. Yes, I know that double edge is out of the question in most states. I don't intend this for EDC, no way. I am curious how the idea will pan out. Thanks again to everyone for their help. Also, I can't see that picture of the Greco on his site.....the link leads me to a blank page?

This advice is very good. Not only is De Leon knives top quality fit and finish, but the prices are so low for a sub-hilt you can't go wrong.

great, but his knives are a little fancier than I would like. Again he makes gorgeous knives but they are also a little too big and more towards the conventional "Fighter" style of knife making. What I'm looking for is a different tool for a different kind of job as an experiment more than anything. I did look around though and couldn't find any that were what I was looking for. You guys were totaly right about Justin at Ranger Knives....he's seems to be digging the ideas we've been batting back and forth and I'm pretty psyched about the possibilities. :)
