I have a few questions for those of you that own an Umnumzaan, and that have actually disassembled it.

I`ve just disassembled mine for the first time today, and I found some greyish sticky stuff (putty?) on the female part of the pivot pin. It looks like it was/is used to secure the pivot pin. It did a good job, as unbolting it wasn`t quite easy.

That being said, I was wondering if any of you found something similar on your pivot pins.
Also, when I put the knife back together, I found that I couldn`t tighten the pivot pin down all the way as the knife would get really hard to open. I guess that is due to the new pivot design?!

So yeah, I guess I`m just trying to figure out the new knife.

Maybe Dave or Nifegrinder could chime in too-I would appreciate any input from the "source". :)

I mentioned the other day in muddog49's thread about our experimenting with locktite on the umnumzaan's pivot screw; well . . . ta dah! And yes, we use tension on the pivot screw to adjust the resistance in the action. I'd like to give you advice on the best way to service and maintain your MnM, but I'm still trying to figure it out my self. Try e-mailing the shop. The best source for umnumzaan info is Chris.

nifegrinder is right, the best info is from Chris Reeve himself or the factory. Though I have had mine apart and there was no lock-tite in my Umnumzaan. I use it daily and haven't seen even the slightest amount of pivot movement. The Umnum is not meant to be tightened all the way down like the Sebenza. Just tight enough to allow the blade to open/flip smoothly. Again the pivot should NOT move once you have adjusted it to the right tention.
Hope this helps.

I was told if you flip a Chris Reeve you void the warrenty. Is this so with the Umnumzaan?
I just got an Umnumzaan this weekend the blade is really tight, I think I need to adjust the pivot. Hurts my thumb and I don't have girly thumbs:confused:

It is a very good possiblity that the pivot was overtightened. It is extremely easy to do. Of course it could be alright too. Mine seemed to loosen up a bit after a few cycles. This is another one of the reasons for me to make the tool to take them apart. I could control this to an extent.

One of the things we are still working on is an Umnumzaan dismantle and cleaning kit with instructions. This will include the tools with which to undo the pivot mechanism and some of the low strength Loctite that we use to ensure the pivot does not loosen accidentally. I guess you guys are just too eager to take things apart!

There has been endless discussion over the "flicking a Sebenza voids the warranty" (I presume you mean flicking not flipping as in "flip this house"!).
A search will get you lots of information. The fact of it is that it is the endless, repetitive flicking that will cause damage to your knife, not just the once in a while instance.

The Umnumzaan opens in the same way as the Sebenza opens with a sweeping, sideways motion on the side of the thumblug. This is usually the remedy for painful thumb but, if the blade is too tight, send it back so we can check it out.

Enjoy your Umnumz!!

Thanks Bill and Anne
I backed the pivot off a hair, all good now very smooth.

Mine was tight when I got it, but it loosened up perfectly after a week of playing with it. It is now buttery smooth
