doing a wire wraped handle ........

should I just do it over the wood straight or do I need a layer of leather between the wood and the wire?

using two strands of 26 gauge wire that have been twisted together..
and help or opinions would be appreciated...

I have done both, over leather and over the wood. If you do it over the leather it will give you a better grip of the wire against the handle. If you do it over the wood then don't make it too smooth. To secure the wire in the handle I drill a hole the size of the wire and stick the wire in it at a 90 degree angle

which way looked better?

Unplug the wire from the wall before using it to wrap the handle.

Sorry. I can't seem to help myself when the opportunity to make some sort of wise-crack presents itself.

If you wrap it properly, none of the under surface will show so it will look the same. If you make your handle and it feels a little too narrow then you can increase the diameter of it by placing leather under the wire.

Christof Derringer uses leather over the wood for his handles. One thing he pointed out
in a talk a couple of years ago was that it is important to use wood pins for the handle
scales instead of metal ones (yes, scales -- it was an integral with double guard and
pommel so the wood handle had to be mortised).

If you use metal pins the wood and metal are likely to expand differently over time which
will raise bumps in the wire wrap.
