if jerry or any body else knowledgeable is listening out there...

i was wondering if it can become a long term durability problem to use my BM as hammer to pound other knives through wood when doing splitting work? i know my busse is "indesructable" , but that kind of metal to metal contact just makes me a little nervous....

anyway, thanks for any info you can give me

Why don't you use a piece of deadwood to hammer your BM as a splitter? The BM is one tough mutha, but I would try to avoid metal on metal hammering unless it was absolutely necessary.

I think the BM would hold up just as well as a hammer as my Boss's BMW would if it was hauling gravel or if I used my PBF as a shovel or if I used my 700 as a makeshift ladder rung, or If I used my Unertl scope to play fetch with my dog. Why would all these top quality items fail at the task at hand? Because they are not meant for it. I don't mean to sound harsh but damn buy a $5 hammer for hammering and save the 300+ dollar knife for I don't know maybe.........CUTTING, CHOPPING, HACKING, SLASHING, SKINING or maybe even whittling :D

buy a hammer, save your bm for chopping through volkswagons:D ;)

your busse will take all you can give it... but i would use a log or a empty michalob bottle!!

ah yes, i could smell the sarcasm coming from a mile away... and yet, i still didn't quite get my question answered. i know that a knife isn't made for hammering (hence the fact that hammers are called hammers, and knives are called knives):D :D , and i know that there are better alternatives to metal to metal pounding. what i want to know is will the metal fatigue or fracture from this type of use if it is necessary.

and idaho, that is a good suggestion, but perhaps a bottle of a heavy stout such as guiness would provide better energy trasfer??? maybe cliff could do a little research on this for us?:D

Matt,

No problem using your Busse in that manner. It is, of course not the best idea for the life expectancy of the other knives that you're pounding.

Sevenedges posted pics of some serious insanity caught on tape when he beat his Basic 9 senseless for 3 hours with a hammer. In spite of the fact that he literally pounded pieces out of the spine of his Busse knife, it NEVER broke!

So, Yes it can be used like that, but I would recommend using either a log or a tool designed for that purpose. If necessary though, it is nice to know that your Busse knife can take it.

Matt,

One more thing. . . . If you're going to use a Guinness bottle to chop down a tree, the best technique is to simply pour the Guinness around the base of the tree. It should die fairly quickly and fall to its death with in minutes!!!!!! ;)

Nuke on!

Jerry

You always have to take a stab at Guiness don't you Jerry! Matt, I agree with all the guys above, it will take it, but it isn't the best use of the knife. Oh wait, I agree with everything above EXCEPT the Guiness killing a tree within minutes thing. Guiness is so stout that it would probably make the tree grow stronger, taller and tougher to bring down! :D :p

HA!! if you think guiness is bad, you should see the chocolate stout i tried the other day...:D :D

and thank you jerry, that was exactly what i wanted to know. and, i'm sure you'll be amused by this - the reason this question came to mind is because i was out with a buddy of mine who owns a MMHW bowie, which is a great knife, but guess which one of them dented when i used his to hammer mine through some wood??;)

i keep offering to chop his MMHW in half   so he has an excuse to get a busse, but he hasn't taken me up on that yet....
