I have seen pics over time here showing knives that some of you have put stag/deer horn scales on showing pins through the scales. I noticed the pins appear to be polished and no signs of the scales being scratched or anything. How do you fellows manage to do this without damaging the scales?

Magic! :D :footinmou

Sorry.....it's easy. Fit your handle and drill for the pins. Cut the pins to size and finish the edges before putting them in. Use a little epoxy to hold them in place.

I think Walt is asking about where pins come through the stag and the stag appears untouched yet the pins are nicely polished.

Beats me. That's why I hide things on scales like that.

Peter has it right.

My favorite, though, is when the maker has taken the extra time to contour the pin to match the grooves in the stag handle. Wow.....it's awesome. Saw another one like that at this last Blade Show....should've bought it, just to look at it....

Dan,

Were the pin faces absolutely flush with the stag and if so was the stag untouched by the finishing of the pins? (in all fairness, except for buffing - of course)

I had seen some that appeared to be flush with the scales and polished. Made me wonder how they were finished without sanding the scales. Thanks

Imagine a nice Indian Stag with deep ruts in it....

If you put a pin it the scales, a big "O" would show on the side....polished or not. These pins had been carved so that they were "inline" with the ruts in the stag. Just like a filling in your teeth....but better...!

I need to find a picture....wish I would have remembered the maker's name....anybody help here?

Walt - the polishing I've seen done was done either before hand, or just with the rest of the handle on the buffer. Quite easy to polish NS or Brass.
