I'm new to Himalayan Imports and all I've seen is them on display as art.Does anyone have any pictures of their khukris at work. I want to see whether it s a good investment. Also which style would you recommend for backwoods use, like camping and hiking. Thanks

hehehe...ask Hollowdweller...he takes pics of everything.

Well...everything legal anyway.

Here's some threads with pics in them from our very own HI tester/torturer Dave Rishar. Do a search on threads started by him and you'll likely find several more.

As for which style khukuri would be suited to your needs, it depends on what cutting/chopping tasks you expect to do as well as your height/weight/strength. The 16.5" Chiruwa AK, 18" WWII, 17-18" BGRS, and 17" FF are popular camping and hiking khukuris, though not the only ones.

Welcome Chazbo88. Pull up a chair. Bob has listed good choices and you've found the right place.

I'll tell you that all my HI khuks are users, and I beat the everliving hell out of each and every one. The ones you've seen on display are tough knives that could just as easily have been users too. Additionally the HI guarantee and customer service is impeccable. Aunt Yangdu WILL take care of any concerns you may have.

For hiking (carrying the khuk for long periods of time), I recommend the BAS, or Chiruwa AK. The CAK has the best warranty I've ever heard of. If you break it you get two replacements. Ever heard of anything like that before?

Welcome Chazbo:)

The others have nailed it. You won't find a harder working blade...especially at the price as an HI khuk. I've had several dozen pass through my hands (many of which are still in my hands;)), and I have yet to be disappointed. Sure, every once in awhile one will come through with a brittle edge, but like the others have said, Yangdu will take care of it. I have been a loyal customer for going on almost 4 years now (wow, has it really been that long?). I have never seen a company so dedicated to providing the best product with the best customer service.

As far as a khuk to suit your needs, it's going to depend on where you're going, how far you're walking, how much you'll need to chop, and strong you are. Most of us have a khuk for every situation;) For general camping, i would suggest the BAS, 15" AK, 15" siru, or 16.5" WWII. I have a great villager model AK (my first khuk) in a cumstom quick draw sheath that I made. That would be all I would need to get by;)
For light hiking where I won't need to chop wood or scare people along the trail, I like the little JKM-1, the SARGE/KPH (I have a modified one that stays on my person just about everyday), and the R-9 that I have coming to me from yesterday's DOTD looks like a great little unbreakable user.
Of course, you could always go with a 12" Pen Knife or 12" AK to fill both needs. They don't chop nearly as well as a 15"er (well the Pen Knife actually kinda does), but they are light and easy to handle. If I were going on a LONG hike, but needed to make a shelter I think I would pack a Pen Knife.

Once again, welcome:)

here's one thread:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=399686

here's an unusual answer:
o goto your "User CP" (control panel)
o find "Number of Posts to Show Per Page" and set to 40
o find "Default Thread Age Cut Off" and set to beginning
you may have to manually set it on the bottom of a forum page the first
time, or log out, and log back in, and it should "forever"...
o surf - start reading articles. go back at least a month, if not just keep
going ALL the way back in time. find out why this here forum is the best!

nobody lurves talking about their khukris and using them than this bunch, and you'll find even in the last 80 articles photos and articles about people beating them up.

you can also use google or the search feature to find various torture tests by like likes of us here all users, and others.

remember: buy one (or a few), wait two-three days for most USA locations, while reading, READ THE SAFETY THREAD - read it again - look for the pictures of people who didn't :P, squeal with delight when large triangular boxes show up, open carefully, squeal some more, sharpen them to your tastes (they come razor to sometimes not so razor depending on villager or polished, the exact kami that made it, phase of moon) - just sharpen anyway, go chop things, clean up, oil it; now you're hooked. buy more. while waiting, find the threads on tweaking your khukris; like how to reshape, refinish and treat your handles, how to protect the steel, read every last page on the official HI website, drool lots, plan other orders, plan gifts to people, buy more, sell some perhaps, buy more sandpaper to sharpen with, collect mouse pads even if you don't have a computer (sharpening). there's more, but that's enough homework for this week.
