can anyone tell me what the technicial name for the holes along the handle of a benchmade butterfly knife is?

Holes.

Seriously, it is called skeletonized. That may be the word you are looking for. The holes themselves are just holes, as far as I know. If there is a "technical" term for them aside from holes, well, that's just stupid.

At least, as far as you know! But If you don't know, then why is IT so stupid? Maybe, it's not, and you're just - well, lets just say "not informed"
I, certainly, don't know.

You could call them "perforations", but that takes more letters to spell and doesn't say it better than "holes". Hiar's right. A handle with holes is "skeletonized". Check out the Strider ED sometime. The holes in that skeletonized handle form the outline of ... a skeleton. :D

^^^ Good point. I have seen them called lightening holes in reguards to knives as well.

They are speed holes. Homer simpson put some in his car with a pickaxe. :D

j/k

I suppose they could have a dual purpose of giving a grippier surface to smooth stainless or titanium handles.

ti handle balis probably don't need to be much lighter. :foot:

pete

btw I have my second "real" bali on the way!!

yay

I think the term you are looking for cucullen9 is - Indexing Divots -.
That is what spyderco calls them on their ATR model folder (not a butterfly knife though). Here's what they say about it. "We precision machine a fistful of steel into a handle then drilled it full of holes. The holes lessen weight, doubling as indexing divots in order to rotate the folder from one grip position to another." - Spyderco. This should apply to butterfly knives esspecially as people very often use them to twirl around, switching grips in the process.
Hope this is helpful.

Since a divot is a piece of turf, a smiley should have been added to the above.
It's safe to assume Spyderco's talking about indexing pivots. But of course that would only be one function of certain holes, and most likely not applicable to the skeleton holes of BM :-)
