I am planning on buying a Scrapper 6 from ScrapYard Knives...and this might be comparing apples to oranges, but I am also thinking about a Cold Steel TrailMaster in their San Mai three. Is that CS TM in the San Mai really worth its price tag ? the ScrapYard knife comes with SR-77 steel, and I know that there are plenty of CS haters out there or atleast LT haters:) but I was just wanting some opinions from those who might own and have used both .

Between Busse,Swamp Rat, and ScrapYard you are getting a knife from a family that definately knows their business no doubt...but there is so much of a love-hate thing with CS its kind of hard tojudge their true performance, I for one do think that those proof dvd's are more of a marketing tool than they are true scientific testing.

Anyway thanks for any feedback

The Scrapper has received many positive reviews and looks to be a very good value. That would be my choice, for what it's worth.

The CS San Mai is just low to mid end laminated stainless, and offers little advantage in a large chopping bowie like the Trailmaster. I think the Trailmaster is a really nice design, and if you want one, you should try to find one of the older ones with the carbon steel. I've read that they were excellent performers. The San Mai version is wildly overpriced.

I have never handled either knives, but this is some pretty common info, and I thought I'd share it.

Ive got the scrapper 6 and a recon scout (a 7 inch version of a trail master). I love both knives so I can be honest about a comparison between the two. Only difference is the rs is carbon v, which, as stated above, you should look for if your buying.

Both knives are made for hard use and both, from what ive heard, have good warrenties.

1. scrapper 6 came sharp and ready for use. The blade is 1/4 inch and the knife is balanced good. The handle is very comfortable and gives a good grip wet or dry.

2 Recon scout was also sharp The blade is a little thicker a 5/16 and is alittle blade heavy. The handle is not as comfortable as the scrapper 6, but gives a good grip also wet or dry.

The recon scout came with a good sheath, and the scrapper 6 the sheath was extra and a simple nylon sheath with plastic liner. The sheath is good quality but I was dissapointed to pay extra for it.

I would say that a CS trailmaster in carbon v would be the better knife for camp chores and would be the better chopper, due to the heavier blade. Untill a scrapper 9 comes out. As for which is of higher quality by reputation alone I would have to say the scrapyard knife.

you cant go wrong if you buy the scrapper 6 like I said I am very pleased with mine and wouldn't trade it for anything. except maby a scrapper 9
hope this helped

If you end up with Cold Steel, I'd definitely go for the Carbon V version. The handle was a little small for me, but I wrapped it in some paracord and it was fine.

Thanks for all the replies, I am leaning towards the Scrapper 6...and I thought that the San Mai Steel sounded a little over priced, they of coarse make it out to be a wonder steel, at well over $300.00 its a wonder they sold any:) .

If I put that kind of money into something,it would be a Busse design.

You can also check Ranger knives.
Stellar customer service, great prices and awesome knives

Thanks for replies, I was leaning towards the ScrapYard knife a little more so from the beginning. It seems like everyone liked the Carbon V more than the more expensive San Mai 3? so in your honest opinion the trade off with those two paticular steels was Carbon V=tougher, less expensive and SM3=not as tough and more expensive????? thats a hard decision to make:o

I have heard much better things in reference to the SR-77 & SR-101(used by Swamp Rat) so if I am going to drop $300.00 + dollars on a knife, I think I will do better with one of those two...or maybe even a Busse:D
