I will be getting my first Ratweiler very soon, I would just like some input regarding the SR101 or modified 52100 as I understand it, VS. a well heat treated A2 with a RC of 58-60.

I have used the search function and have read some different posts in reference to SR101 VS. other steels, and I also checked out Cliff Stamps site (Cutlery Science) and his reveiw of the Ratwielers performance was very amazing.

I would just like to hear some first hand info from you folks...does the SR101 trump most steel types in a survival type knife (toughness, edge holding, etc...)

Is 52100 itself a superior steel, add the Busse heat treat and now its darn near INFI without having quite the amount of abrasion resistance/corrosion resistance that INFI does?

Thanks in advance

I've had survival/choppers in both A2 and 5160. In the Rat/Chopweiler form, the SR101 has excelled. The edge held longer without any deformation. I find it easy to return to a good working edge.

I think you'll be very impressed. ;)

BTW - I've had a couple of rats that I took down to satin and never had any corrosion issues. I just took reasonable care of the blade.

Welcome!

I ended up with one of Paddling-Man's satin RatWeiler's and its still going strong! no corrosion issues yet, its still a great chopper:thumbup:

I think I asked this question, too. IIRC, A2 is more expensive than 52100 and does not lend itself well to differential hardening. My experience with SR-101 is that it is very tough, easy to get very sharp, and stays that way...and the price is reasonable.:thumbup:Just keep the edge polished and oiled once in a while; rust won't be a problem.
