I was reading a review on the Emerson CQC7, but the author keeps refering to the knife as a Benchmade CQC7.......

is Benchmade the lesser expensive line of Emerson, or licensed by emerson to use the CQC name and design?

Benchmade made the 7 before Emerson did it them selves. As far as I know BM no longer produce the 7s.

Benchmade model numbers 970 and 975 are Ernie's CQC-7 design, small and large, respectively. He licensed the design to BM. I don't have the exact production dates at hand, but I believe they started making them in 1994 or 1995 and disco'd by 1999.

There were several variations of the models, all of which tend to be referred to as a Benchmade CQC-7.

those dates sound pretty close FWIW.

the knives from BM and EKI are pretty close except:

*the BM is tip down carry vs EKI's tip up.

*ATS34 on the BM vs 154CM on the EKI.

both are good knives imho, i prefer the EKI version myself mostly due to it being tip up.

thanks for the info, i was confused, was'nt sure if BM had scooped the design or something. ....

I have a pretty early large Benchmade model that my Dad gave me as a kid. It is what started my recent Emerson buying frenzy. IIRC the Benchmade model is slightly larger than the standard Emerson CQC-7. I have used it since I got it and It is one of the pretty early ones and it is still one of my favorite carry knives.

FWIW the 970 is the same size as a CQC7(3.4" IIRC) and the 975 is a little longer ~ 3.8" IIRC, EKI didnt make a comparable size CQC7 until they came out with the super '7.

but the 970 is exactly the same size as the '7.........

Thats what I had always thought but I wasnt sure as I have never handled a 970. The tip down and ATS-34 seem to be the only major differences.

they are good kniives i have probably carried/used my BM 975Sbt as much as any of my EKI's, edc'd it for over a year, no problems with it, the liner lock went all the way over to the far side but lockup was fine, still have it FWIW.

the 970 and current cqc 7 are almost identical in size. the blade on the bm is slightly wider, as are the scales (edge to spine), iirc. i dont have my bm anymore, so cant give exact specs. perhaps someone else can mic them to confirm.

also the grinds are of slightly different length, ie where the edges meet toward the tip.

the early eki 7's were tapped for tip up or tip down carry. my 7 is from 1999, and is tapped for both.

I have both the Benchmade and the Emerson version. The Benchmade was purchased straight when they came out, the Emerson a couple of years later.
Fairly equal knives, slight preference for the Benchmade, but that's more for nostalgic reasons. (It was my first "expensive" knife) The Benchmade got pretty used&abused, but held up very good. Haven't used the Emerson much but trust it to be of the same quality.

Kind regards,

Jos

Jos---Can you do some pix? :)

Unfortunately only one now:

Top - Benchmade 970
Bottom - Emerson CQC7 (Wave)

The rest will have to wait until I'm back home. Right now there's a few thousand km between me and my collection.:(

Kind regards,

Jos
