Question

How much of your $ that you spend towards "Wilderness/Survival" goes towards cultery??

As in--You have to spend $1000 on items to equip yourself--how much would be on knives??

20%,50%,etc....

Most of my knives far in the $200-300 range--so my answer would be 30% or so.

You??

17% I could get a good survival knife, maybe a custom even for under $110, then have enough for a stout folding knife.

Most to cutlery, because I paid lots of $$ for gear in the past ten years. Still, my wife let me pull for 3 items today (entrant pants, a Snow Peak titanium pot - reviewed here and a Henessey Hammock - also reviewed here several times). So this month, I'm batting 40% on gear, 60% expenditures on cutlery.

Where does sheaths count in the rank order there :D

Lately it's been alot for me, but now that I feel I have a good stable of blades there's some holes in my other equipment that I want to take care of next.

But if I was given 1000 bucks right now for a full setup, I would probably buy a fixed blade in the 4inch blade range from either Stomper or Koyote (~$150) a wetterlings axe (~$60) and couple of SAKs ($40). That makes 250, so I guess 25 percent.

Same here. I have my five go to blades , a couple of axes. So this winter I'll be updating some of my gear.

I've been thinking of this a lot, I have some custom knives, and most of my gear is surplus or yard sale modified. All my kit probably is less expensive than my knife all put together, but I'm working on changing that...much to my wifes and bank acounts dismay :)

If any of our wives/gfs see this thread, you realize survival will turn into a whole different situation.

I carry around (at msrp value) $500 worth of sharp stuff on my person daily. That's not including the stuff in my EDC pack. Most of my pieces are in the $100-$200 range. But if I had $1000 given to me to outfit myself I don't think I'd need to spend more than $100 or so. I'd be grabbing my Mora (or my Condor Rodan), one of my machetes, and my Vic Swiss Spirit. The rest would go straight into other awesome stuff. :D

My lady never wants to hear how much money I've sunk into knives over the years. :o

I haven't gotten a new knife in probably at least 8 months. I'm actually quite content in that area.

Any purchases towards gear or survival equipment has been to improve existing or worn-out gear and replace consumables.

If I had $1000 right now to spend on survival/outdoor items, none of it would go towards blades at this time.

No worries on that here...we have a deal. I don't tell her how to be a Sociologist and she doesn't tell me how to be me

I don't spend a lot on any one knife, so the percentage would be very low for me. My main expenditures are on improving gear as I go. I do pick up "good deals" on knives when I find them and in multiples, even so, I've never spent more than $80 on a knife so I'd have to say 8% would be a maximum!! Given $1,000, I doubt if I'd spend $100 of it on knives.

I would say 25% to 35% for a knife I am going to use the heck out of.There are quite a few makers that can make you exactly what you want in this price range.

If I was starting from scratch, and had 1k to equip, Id go 20%. Probably an RC4 or similar, and a Vic Farmer. Then a .22, the rest would be spent on a pack, tarp, etc...

If I had a grand to start from scratch... knife and axe money would be less than a hundred. Good quality clothing and sleeping gear are where I'd put the rest of the money, and any remaining would be on gas to get me there and back. A take down recurve would be nice though...

I'm pretty much set on blades and firearms after 40 yrs of buying. I'd probably spend the grand on clothing sleeping and cook gear. Maybe a couple of those hot flashlights.--KV

When it comes to what I actually spend, I'm rather heavy on the cutlery, but like a lot of us I'm sure, theres a ton of redundancy in what I buy. Actually looking at what I'd take outside with me on any given outing, its a lot more reasonable. I rarely carry more at any one time than a pocketknife, multitool and a big knife or axe, depending on what the trip plan is
