I have never purchased a black coated blade. Does the coating come off easy? Do they fade or rub off over time? Can they be recoated? If they can be recoated, does any one know of a company that does it?

Which company makes the best black coating?

I am considering purchasing a emerson commander with a black blade and the new CRKT SRT with a black blade.

There are different coatings. Most blades are coated with something related to teflon. This scratches easily (by my standards, anyway - you may think otherwise). Others (Microtech, for example) are coated with Titanium Carbo-Nitride. This does not scratch as easily.

Coatings will always be susceptible to scratching. They cannot be re-coated.

I wouldn't. In my opinion, black coated blades don't look good, and they don't work good. If you must have a non-reflective finish, try satin or something similar.

With Black coated blades, a Titaniam bsaed finish will hold up very well. Black T (Walter Birdsong) and similar high quality finishes will scuff and wear with hard usage (stripping wire, lots of hard wood whittling and, other similar things) but, with normal usalge will be very close to factory new for a very long time. The Cheaper "Teflon" finishes and various black coatings used on cheap knives will not hold up well at all.

Last time I checked, Walter Birdsong was still accepting single knife coating requests. There are probably several custom knife makers who could recoat your blade in call guard as well.

Best coating? A Ti-Nitride variation.
Second Best? Black T types finishes as seen on Emersons and Benchmades.

I have an Emerson Commander in Black T that is holding up very well. I strip wire with it and cut things like aluminum cans with it. The edges of aluminum cans have put a few light surface scratches in the blade that would probably come out if I did a little blade maintanence. The black blade looks really cool, the wave opening really impresses people (and it works very well) and, the CM154 blade holds up well to a lot of usuage.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

I agree with the above points there. The MT coating is for sure going to hold up better than most. The Benchmade coating I have seen from guys who "really" use their knife, does show significant wear. I just got in my CRKT SRT Black coated models. While I think they are way cool looking, they are probably going to show wear easily like a Benchmade. If I were concerned about cosmetics, go with a bead blast,or satin type finish and keep the black ones for display
