Questions about breaking in new emersons

I am new to carrying and now collecting knives. I've bought a few spydercos, benchmades but have been blown away by emersons. There is just something about em. So in about a month and a half I've bought 4 of em but the last two are giving me problems with breaking them in. Ive dealt with all the common problems I've read on these forumns, gritty movement, lockstick, a humming sound when opening and closing. This forumn has provided me with solutions for every single issue except the humming which I finally got rid of by lightly sanding the scales where the washers sit. It has completely eliminated the noise.
The first 2 I got were the roadhouse first because it's the baddest blade shape I've seen and my personal favorite, then the horseman which I love and has the greatest grip I've come across so far. They both broke in wonderfully and are now super smooth and lockup had not budged since the lockstick had finally stopped. However, my current newbies, the mini roadhouse and the gentleman jim are giving me a whole new set of problems. I held off on cleaning them as long as I could but when I cleaned them they were great for the first 20-30 opening/closings but then became very tough to open/close. Pull em apart, clean and the same thing happens. I don't understand why it would become harder to open the more it is used. The one big difference b/w these 2 and my first 2 is they have a small and large washer. After I first took em apart I called emerson and was told the smaller washer goes on the lock side. However on the mini roadhouse it is on the non locking side. So I'm confused. I'd like to know for sure what side which washer goes on aand if anyone has encountered this same problem? And yes, I've applied lube during assembly and also with no lube. I currently have one lubed and one dry. The gentleman jims pivot shaft does spin in the liner a 1/8" or so which I thought may cause the pivot to tighten up, but loosening up on it doesn't help without having blade play. I know gritty and tough action is typical on a new emerson but after breaking in 2 knives in the last month with no problem, this has thrown me for a loop mainly because the action always got better after a cleaning as opposed to getting worse after a certain amount of opening/closings. Any ideas would be great and if anyone knows for sure which side the washers go on would be awesome.

Thanks guys

Smaller washer always goes on lockside.

Usually these gritty openings are caused by some sticky substance like dried fruit juice or something getting on the side of the blade or the detent balls. Alot of times gritty openings are caused by fruit juice on the detent ball.

Emersons have double detents as I am sure you noticed when disassembling so check to make sure that the detent balls, detent holes, detent tracks and sides of the blade tangs are completely clean.

Thanks, but it will happen without any use, only from being open and closed. The action just gets worse pretty quickly. I just stopped smoking so I fidget with my knives.

I checked the detent balls as well, they seem to be fine. Thanks for the tip on the washers lape, going to switch the roadhouse around now!

It could be the detent track wearing in and the washers too. They may be some loose micro material causing the stiffness. I had this happen on my roadhouse, but it had a coated black blade. Keep using it and maybe cleaning it until it gets better.
What lube are you using? I switched to grease, a thin film helped keep things smooth.

Strip it down, clean everything is dish soap and warm water. Dry completely. Reassemble without any lube. Play with it a day or two, then clean it again. I definitely break in my Emersons without lube, and usually find I don't need lube at all even afterwards.

Every new logo Emerson I've handled needed zero break in. Disclaimer is I love a lock with a bit of stick, but the action on every new logo model I've picked up is incredible.

Thanks, I haven't tried washing all the components yet. I'll try that this evening. I cleaned and lubed the gentleman jim and put some loctite on the pivot last night and let it sit. Going to see how it goes today. I switched the washers on the mini roadhouse and that may have fixed the problem with that one. Thanks for the tips, and I agree that they don't need lube at all, especially when broken in. But this gj is putting a hurting on my thumb!

After putting lube on the washers and loctite on the pivot, the gj is working like a charm. Going to roll with it lubed till the break in is done. Thanks to all for the tips!
